Movie Review: Just abort 'Apollo 18' | Carson City Nevada News ...

The sci-fi horror film "Apollo 18," currently playing at the Casino Fandango multiplex in Carson City and elsewhere, is a strange bird of a movie. The premise is that while NASA claimed to have scrubbed Apollo 18, it was actually rescheduled as a secret mission to plant Soviet ICBM detectors on the Moon. Three astronauts were selected and briefed and launched.

Once on the Moon things start to go wrong. Commander Nathan Walker, Lieutenant Colonel John Grey and Captain Benjamin Anderson (Lloyd Owen, Warren Christie and Ryan Robbins) split with Grey remaining in orbit while the other two land in lunar module Liberty.

Strange things happen. The flag the two astronauts put up disappears and footsteps lead them to a Russian lunar module and a dead Soviet cosmonaut.

Rocks start jumping around and in time become alien beings, able to penetrate space suits. When the astronauts want to come home, the Defense Department says no in the voice of the secretary of Defense.
It all dissolves with the lunar lander infected with the alien rocks.

It takes no genus to figure out the lunacy of all this. Launching a secret mission is clearly impossible. Planting ICBM on the Moon is lunacy and leaving the three astronauts there even more inane. Nothing holds together as a good sci-fi should. The acting is mostly square-jawed hard-nosed stuff, hard to tell how good it is. And the mock documentary style ? jumpy sequences, static, signal loss etc. ? doesn't help.
And so much is clearly faked, the Moon walking flat steps when we have all seen how the astronaututs skipped along merrily.

Direction is haphazard at best, script is sloppy and it all adds up to a solid flop. NASA wisely refused to cooperate with the film makers.
Don't waste your time here when you could be seeing the fine flick "The Help." Or even the atrocious "Shark Night." The sharks are at least in 3-D.
