Molded Massage Oil | Natural Holistic Health Blog

* 4 tablespoons solid vegetable shortening
* 3 tablespoons solid cocoa butter
* 2 tablespoons solid coconut oil
* 1 tablespoon beeswax
* 1 tablespoon paraffin wax
* 10 drops orange essential oil (or whatever you like)

Heat all the above, except essential oil, in a microwave (power 7) for approximately 3 minutes or melt in a double boiler.

Stir until liquid. If you want them colored, add a crayon or wax dye. Beat for several minutes until emulsified and slightly thick. If it isn?t thickening, place your bowl in ice water as you beat it with an electric mixer.

Add essential oil. Pour into metal or lightly oiled plastic/glass molds. (Chocolate molds work well and are about the right amount for a body massage.) Refrigerate until set.

Wrap in plastic and store in a cool place.

To use, simply hand warm your molded oil and give a massage to your favorite person or give yourself a foot massage.

Breast Cancer Grows with ELF5 | TopNews Arab Emirates

Breast Cancer Grows with ELF5A panel of researchers from the Garvan Institute in Sydney, Australia, has revealed following a recent report that it is a protein that makes the already deadly breast cancer more aggressive.

It is being said by the team that the disease?s resistance to varied treatments is also seen because of the same. Chris Ormandy and colleagues have studied the protein dubbed ELF5 for a long period of 10 years and thus concluded the above.

The team warns that the protein only causes the illness to develop in one and turn into a treacherous form. It makes the already-existing tumour to turn into the oestrogen-insensitive type. And cancers usually are unmanageable, when it comes to be cured by anti-oestrogen treatment, since they have high levels of ELF5.

They as a result of carrying the protein become oestrogen receptor negative, says the report. It has been told that in these cases, i. e. amid tissue-culture models of this cancer type that are made numb to such treatment, the ELF5 levels augment notably.

The study is being hoped to pave way for new possibilities of treatments. However, the same may take many years. It would be helpful in targeting ELF5 so that breast cancers numb to anti-oestrogens are effectively treated.

NHL, players union spend day on conference calls

Commissioner Gary Bettman and the league would like to reach a deal no later than Jan. 11, which would allow a 48-game season to begin Jan. 19.

Lucas Jackson/Reuters

NEW YORK (AP) -- Lots of questions, but still no answers in the NHL labor fight.

The league and the players' association spent much of Saturday talking to each other via conference call. The conversations were strictly for the purpose of sharing information regarding the new contract offer the NHL made to the union late Thursday.

The initial thought was that the sides would get together Sunday in New York to hold official negotiations for the first time in weeks, but those weren't scheduled before discussions ended Saturday.

Staff level calls were expected to resume Sunday, which could include face-to-face talks at some point, but no actual bargaining meetings have been set.

"Some more informational sessions in the morning,'' NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press regarding Sunday. "Nothing planned beyond that.''

The union pored over the latest NHL proposal aimed at ending the lockout that reached its 105th day Saturday and saving the delayed hockey season. The league would like to reach a deal no later than Jan. 11, which would allow training camps to start the following day, and a 48-game season to begin Jan. 19.

Saturday's conference calls were scheduled Friday night so the union could ask league officials questions about the nearly 300-page proposal. Whether enough progress will be made to lead to face-to-face talks remains to be seen.

The sides haven't gotten together since Dec. 13 with federal mediators. Bargaining sessions with only the NHL and union involved haven't been held since Dec. 6, when talks abruptly ended after the players' association made a counterproposal to the league's previous offer. The league said that offer was contingent on the union accepting three elements unconditionally and without further bargaining.

The NHL then pulled all existing offers off the table. Two days of sessions with mediators the following week ended without any progress made.

The players' association's executive board and negotiating committee went over the new proposal during an internal conference call Friday.

A person familiar with key points of the offer told The Associated Press that the league proposed raising the limit of individual free-agent contracts to six years from five -- seven years if a team re-signs its own player; raising the salary variance from one year to another to 10 percent, up from 5 percent; and one compliance buyout for the 2013-14 season that wouldn't count toward a team's salary cap but would be included in the overall players' share of income.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the new offer weren't being discussed publicly.

The NHL maintained the deferred payment amount of $300 million it offered in its previous proposal, an increase from an earlier offer of $211 million. The initial $300 million offer was pulled off the table after negotiations broke off earlier this month.

The latest proposal is for 10 years, running through the 2021-22 season, with both sides having the right to opt out after eight years.

The lockout has reached a critical stage, threatening to shut down a season for the second time in eight years. All games through Jan. 14, plus the Winter Classic and the All-Star game already have been called off. The next round of cuts could claim the entire schedule.

The NHL is the only North American professional sports league to cancel a season because of a labor dispute, losing the 2004-05 campaign to a lockout. A 48-game season was played in 1995 after a lockout stretched into January.

It is still possible this dispute could eventually be settled in the courts if the sides can't reach a deal on their own.

The NHL filed a class-action suit this month in U.S. District Court in New York in an effort to show its lockout is legal. In a separate move, the league filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board, contending bad-faith bargaining by the union.

Those moves were made because the players' association took steps toward potentially filing a "disclaimer of interest,'' which would dissolve the union and make it a trade association. That would allow players to file antitrust lawsuits against the NHL.

Union members voted overwhelmingly to give their board the power to file the disclaimer by Jan. 2. If that deadline passes, another authorization vote could be held to approve a later filing.

Negotiations between the NHL and the union have been at a standstill since talks ended Dec. 6. One week later, the sides convened again with federal mediators in New Jersey, but still couldn't make progress.

The sides have been unable to reach agreement on the length of the new deal, the length of individual player contracts, and the variance in salary from year to year. The NHL is looking for an even split of revenues with players.

Miami 'Housewives' Heat Up First Reunion Show

Considering how sweetly The Real Housewives of Miami (Thurdays at 9 p.m. EST, on Bravo) wrapped up season 2 (with all those tears and tossed flowers in Bimini Bay), the reunion show’s contentious atmosphere was pretty shocking. Sure, we knew some old foes would go at it. (We’re looking at you, Adriana and Joanna!) But some surprising enemies also emerged. (What gives, Ana and Lea?) Even Lisa Hochstein, who’s usually the Switzerland of this group, got pulled into the fray at one point, when Joanna accused her of not sticking up for her. Here are some battle highlights.

Celebrating New Year's Eve with Kids? Here Are 6 Ideas | Zing Blog ...

iStock 000022527935XSmall Celebrating New Years Eve with Kids? Here Are 6 IdeasBecoming a parent changes? a lot of things. You sleep less, stress more, and more importantly, have more people to love. On a more disappointing note, having kids typically means that your hard-partying days are over.

You might not be ringing in the New Year at a crazy party, but that doesn?t mean that you can?t have any fun. In fact, you might even find that spending a quiet(er) New Year?s Eve with the kids is a lot more enjoyable and much less exhausting. So if you?ll be spending this holiday with the kiddos, grab your mom (or dad) jeans and let?s plan a night to remember!

Plan a restful night in

For years, my family celebrated with a night at home. We?d set out a feast of junk food, play board games and watch Dick Clark?s New Year?s Rockin? Eve until midnight. We?d have cheese fondue, M&Ms, chips and dip, and millionaire?s cake ? an amazing layered dessert made with chocolate pudding, cool whip, cream cheese, and nuts. The night wasn?t complete until we had a sparkling grape juice toast at midnight. And if the notion of relaxing in front of the TV and eating isn?t enticing enough, just remember that you?ll even be able to go to bed early if the mood strikes.

Go out to eat

Spoil your family. Get dressed up and go out to dinner. Some kid-focused restaurants throw parties to celebrate the night. For example, the Rainforest Caf? near my house is offering a New Year?s Eve buffet with food and activities for the whole family. Make reservations for one of these kid-friendly celebrations or ask the kids where they?d like to go.

Spend some time out of town

Plan a one- or two-night getaway for the family. Even if you?re only going an hour away, this change of pace will force you to leave work and chores at home and focus on your family. Here are some short vacation ideas that could make for a fun New Year?s Eve.

  • Stay at a waterpark hotel. Unless you live somewhere warm, the kids haven?t seen a swimming pool since Labor Day. Splash away 2012 with a visit to an indoor waterpark.
  • Go skiing. Book a short stay at a ski resort and get the kids some lessons. And as a bonus, you?ll be working off those holiday calories instead of consuming more.
  • Go to the beach. If you?re somewhere warm, take the kids for a beach getaway. Spend the first few minutes of the New Year taking a moonlit walk along the shore.
  • Go to Disney World. If your NYE budget is accommodating, take the family to Orlando?s Disney World for a memorable evening. With extended park hours, a magical parade and an amazing fireworks display, Disney World is the ideal place to spend the evening with kids.

Look for community events

My town, like many others, hosts a ?first night? party. It?s from 4:00?7:00 pm so that the kids will be awake, and it includes food, games, live music and tons of other family fun. If you?re looking to get ?out and about? for the evening, gather some neighbors and head out for a local celebration.

Throw a family-friendly bash

You know those friends you partied with when you were childless and carefree? They?re probably in the same boat. Invite them and their children over for one big New Year?s Eve bash. Here are some ideas for making your party a success.

  • Tell everyone to bring pajamas. Young kids won?t be able to stay awake until midnight. Invite them to bring pajamas and sleeping bags so that they can have a slumber party on the living room floor.
  • Serve plenty of ?mocktails.? The kids need something non-alcoholic to toast with at midnight. Serve beverages like sparkling juice, Shirley Temples, or this tasty Floating Island Punch, made with orange sherbet, ginger ale, and concentrate.
  • Set out plenty of games for the kids. ?Adult time? is possible if the kids are entertained enough. If you provide several board games and crafts, you might be able to sneak in a few moments of adult conversation, disruption-free.
  • Consider hiring a babysitter. Ask a teenager to oversee the kids during your party. That way, the adults won?t have to worry about the kids being unsupervised while you?re having fun.

Organize last year?s memories

Unless you?re a supermom, you probably have quite a few digital photos that haven?t even been printed. Before the big night, print off all of your photos from your digital camera and phone. Spend the evening scrapbooking, putting photos in albums and laughing over memories from this past year.

With a little bit of advance planning, New Year?s Eve with the little ones can be tons of fun. How does your family celebrate New Year?s Eve? I?d love to hear your ideas! Send me an email or let me know in the comments.

Immune system changes may drive aggressiveness of recurrent tumors

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Nearly half of the 700,000 cancer patients who undergo surgical removal of a primary tumor each year suffer a recurrence of their disease at some point, and many of those patients will eventually die from their disease. The traditional view of recurrent tumors is that they are resistant to therapy because they've acquired additional genetic mutations that make them more aggressive and impervious to drugs. Now, however, researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania show in an animal model that the enhanced aggressiveness of recurrent tumors may be due to changes in the body's immune response.

The findings are published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Typically when a patient has a tumor recurrence, their oncologist treats them, much like they treated them for the primary tumor -- with drugs aimed at the tumor cells themselves. But we've found that it might be better to attack the tumor cells and knock down the bad immune cells that are protecting the tumor," says senior study author Sunil Singhal, MD,assistant professor of Surgery and director, Thoracic Surgery Research Laboratory at the Perelman School of Medicine.

To assess the impact of anti-cancer vaccines on primary and recurrent tumors, the researchers immunized mice that had a primary or a recurrent tumor in their flank. Although both groups of animals developed an immune response to the vaccine, only the primary-tumor animals showed tumor shrinkage in response to the vaccine. The recurrent tumors appeared unaffected by the vaccine response. Moreover, this pattern held for several different vaccines.

Despite the prevailing models of tumor recurrence -- which emphasize genetic changes in the tumor cells themselves -- Singhal and colleagues could not find substantial genetic or behavior differences in the recurrent versus primary tumors that might account for the pattern of response.

By contrast, when the team looked at the types of immune cells in and around the tumor, Singhal's team saw a big difference. The recurrent-tumor mice had a large increase in the number of regulatory T cells, compared with primary-tumor animals. That could be important, says Singhal, because T regulatory cells are responsible for holding other immune cells in check and blocking immune responses.

Additionally, macrophages that protect the tumor cells from immune system also increased in number and activity in the recurrent-tumor animals.

Remarkably, when the researchers treated recurrent-tumor animals with drugs that block macrophage activity, tumor growth slowed significantly. However, the same drugs had no effect on primary-tumor animals.

Singhal says it is not clear exactly what triggers the immune system changes, but whatever it is appears to happen at the time of surgery. His group has already started looking for alterations in signaling molecules.

In the meantime, though, he notes that there are newly approved drugs and experimental agents that block regulatory T cells. Given his team's new results, he thinks testing these agents in patients with recurrent disease -- in combination with drugs that attack the tumor cells themselves -- could be an important advance for patients.

"We could impact the outcomes of as many as 250,000 patients a year, if this strategy works," he said.

Chevron's CEO: Affordable energy is crucial - San Antonio Express ...

NEW YORK (AP) ? Chevron CEO John Watson notices something important as he visits his company's operations around the globe: Governments everywhere find high energy prices much scarier than the threat of global warming.

And that means the world will need a lot more oil and gas in the years to come.

To meet that demand, Chevron is in the midst of an enormous cycle of investment aimed at extracting oil and gas from wherever it hides in the earth's crust.

Chevron Corp., based in San Ramon, Calif., is the second largest investor-owned oil and gas company in the world, and the third largest American company of any type as measured by revenue and profit. Over the last year, Chevron has earned $24 billion on revenue of $231 billion.

Every day, the company produces the equivalent of 2.7 million barrels of oil and gas, mostly outside the U.S.

Next year Chevron will invest $33 billion ? more than it ever has ? to drill wells, erect platforms, build refineries and scan for undiscovered deposits of oil and gas. Among its biggest projects: A natural gas operation in Australia that will ultimately cost Chevron and its partners $65 billion to build. Also planned are three deep-water drilling and production projects in the Gulf of Mexico that will cost $16 billion.

Watson, a 55-year-old California native and Chevron lifer, joined the company in 1980 as a financial analyst. Before becoming CEO in 2010 he was vice chairman in charge of strategic planning, business development and mergers and acquisitions. He also ran the company's international exploration and production business, led the company's integration with Texaco and was CFO.

Watson has helped shape Chevron into the best performing major oil company in the world by several financial benchmarks, including the profit it makes for each barrel of oil it sells.

In an interview at The Associated Press headquarters in New York, Watson discussed world energy dynamics, U.S. energy policy, hydraulic fracturing, and working abroad. Below are excerpts, edited for length and clarity.

AP: Why do people and politicians dislike big oil companies that deliver the energy they rely on and benefit from?

WATSON: They don't feel like they have the choices. Most products that you consume every day, you have a choice. In energy you have less choice. And as costs rise, it hits the family budget. It's a convenience that we like, but we'd rather pay less for it.

AP: Is there anything you can do about that?

WATSON: Invest in good projects around the world. Every drop of oil that we produce anywhere in the world hits world markets and, other things being equal, brings prices down.

AP: What do you think is the biggest misunderstanding about your company or your industry?

WATSON: Just how much we invest in the business and the risks that we take to deliver the oil and gas that we all expect every day. We literally go to the ends of the earth to bring this energy to consumers.

AP: Can the industry continue to produce oil and gas at a price that can keep the world economy growing?

WATSON: I think so. We want to produce at a price our customers can afford, and I think there's ample resource to do that for the foreseeable future.

AP: Energy companies complain that the U.S. is over-regulated, but at the same time they are expanding here and cite its many advantages. Which is it? Is the U.S. a terrible place to do business, or is it terrific?

WATSON: On balance it's a good place to do business. We always have to be aware of what other governments are doing, and we have to be sure that we stay competitive. When I met with the president with some of my colleagues a couple weeks ago, that was the first thing that people talked about. It wasn't about taxes per se, it was about staying competitive.

AP: People on all sides of the energy debate have long complained about the lack of a comprehensive energy policy in the U.S. Are we wishing for something that just can't happen in this country? And if not, what would it look like to you?

WATSON: Historically the United States has had a wonderful energy policy. We're blessed with a diversity of resources. We have oil. We have gas. We have coal. We have nuclear. And renewables. And as a result, one of our biggest competitive advantages has been affordable energy. You need a strong economy and you need affordable energy to fuel that economy.

AP: Do fossil fuel producers bear the responsibility for curbing greenhouse gas emissions?

WATSON: We have the responsibility to deliver our energy in an environmentally sound fashion. The greatest advancements in living standards in recorded history have taken place in the modern hydrocarbon era. I don't think that's coincidental. Our leaders have to make a decision. Do they want that to continue or do they have a better solution for us? So it's not my call.

AP: How should society go about reducing greenhouse gas emissions?

WATSON: If you look around the world, the countries with the best environmental practices are the wealthiest. There's a reason for that. If you're worried about where your next meal is going to come from or shelter over your head, your focus is on those things.

AP: The U.S. is a wealthy country, how should we reduce emissions?

WATSON: Well, we are a wealthy country. On the other hand, the economy is growing slowly. We have high unemployment. I think that's part of the reason why the president said now is not the time for a carbon tax, because he recognized that that would put pressure on the economy and put pressure on our energy prices, put pressure on manufacturing business, put pressure on consumers.

AP: When it's time to address the carbon issue, how should we do it?

WATSON: It's very difficult for the United States to go it alone. Watch what (other) governments do. The day-to-day decisions being made (show) that concern about climate change is less than other concerns that they have. China is racing by the U.S. in greenhouse gas emissions. Germany is shutting down their nuclear power, the only energy source with zero carbon emissions that can be produced at scale. Japan, much the same way. Governments around the world are making the choice that the benefits of lifting people out of squalor are very important. And affordable energy is the way to get there. And that currently comes through oil, gas and coal.

That doesn't mean there's nothing we can do. First, we can do a lot more on energy efficiency in this country. There are a number of promising technologies to deliver lower carbon fuels. I would support (government funding) of pre-commercial activity to try to advance some of these breakthrough technologies, rather than putting big subsidies on technologies that we know are more expensive and won't necessarily solve the issue.

AP: Will fracking be curtailed in this country?

WATSON: I see very little obstacle to it, notwithstanding all the rhetoric. Now it's being done in some different areas. People aren't used to it, and there have been legitimate concerns expressed, like truck traffic at a simple level, but also concerns about water supplies. They're understandable anxieties. And so we have to work through those with the governments. I think in due course we'll do that because they'll see the advantages to it.

AP: Will natural gas become a bigger part of the energy mix?

WATSON: Natural gas will displace coal in power generation. Getting natural gas into the transportation fleet is harder. It works best for vehicles that work from centralized fueling facilities like trucking fleets or buses and cabs. That is happening. Before it can make big inroads beyond that, infrastructure is going to need to be developed. It will take some time.

AP: A recent factory fire in Bangladesh killed more a hundred people, shining a spotlight on the connections between Western companies and overseas suppliers. What is the responsibility of a company like yours when you go into a developing area?

WATSON: We have global standards for how we operate. And it's our responsibility to operate to those high standards everywhere. We use local labor in almost all cases and we spend an enormous amount of time training people. We provide half the natural gas in Bangladesh. I've been there a number of times. If you go to a construction site, you won't see hard hats. You won't see shoes in many cases. And so we teach people safety standards.

New-home sales strongest in more than 2 years | MyFOX8.com ...

newhomes

New-home sales rose in November, recording their strongest pace in more than 2 years, another sign of improvement in the housing market.

The Census Bureau reported Thursday that sales of new homes rose to an annual rate of 377,000 in the month, up 4.4% from October, and up 15% from year-earlier levels. It was the highest rate of new-home sales since April 2010, when sales were inflated by a temporary $8,000 tax credit for home buyers.

A combination of near record low mortgage rates, lower unemployment and a drop in foreclosures means there are more buyers interested in purchasing, and fewer available homes. That in turn has lifted home prices.

Those supply-and-demand dynamics are especially true in the new-home market.

There was only a 4.7 month supply of new homes on the market in November, the same tight inventory as has been the case in four of the previous six months. The last time there was a tighter supply of new homes available was in October 2005, near the height of the housing bubble.

The tight supply has lifted the median price of a new home sold in November to $246,200, up 14.9% from the comparable price a year earlier.

Anika Khan, senior economist with Wells Fargo Securities, said the report was stronger than expected, especially for what is traditionally a slow month for home sales. She said new-home sales and construction are becoming a more important driver of overall economic growth, which is even more important with the economy facing other headwinds such as a cutback on business investment and consumer worries about the fiscal cliff.

?New-home sales is a good story and it will continue to be a good story,? she said.

New-home sales can be more important to the economy than sales of previously owned homes since they require purchase of other goods, such as appliances, and because of the construction jobs needed to build the homes.

The continued rebound in prices likely will be a positive for both purchases and construction in the year ahead. Higher prices give current homeowners an incentive to sell their homes and procure the down payment they need for their next home purchase. Potential home buyers, who may have been on the sidelines because of uncertainty about home prices, might also be lured into the market.

Timeline of Top Political Stories of 2012

American politics had plenty of press coverage in 2012. A presidential election was held Nov. 6. Key ballot issues passed as voters accepted legalized marijuana and gay marriage. Congress has yet to avert a financial pitfall that could happen once the new year starts. Despite the overload of political stories from 2012, some stood out more than others throughout the year.

Feb. 29: Fiscal cliff appears

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke coined the term "fiscal cliff" in late February during testimony before Congress. The fed chief said, "A massive fiscal cliff of large spending cuts and tax increases," according to the Nightly Business Report. The chairman went on to say he hoped Congress will "figure out ... long-run fiscal improvement without having it all happen at one date."

Feb. 29: Rush Limbaugh's "slutgate"

Politico noted Rush Limbaugh's controversial remarks he made regarding Sandra Fluke, the 30-year-old Georgetown law student who testified before Congress in favor of free contraception from insurance providers. The talk show host proceeded to call the young woman a "slut" and a "prostitute" for alleging she's being "paid to have sex" on campus.

March 1: Andrew Breitbart's death

Conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart died of a massive heart attack near his home in Los Angeles. Fox News reported the websites Breitbart founded announced his "unexpected" death from "natural causes." Breitbart helped bring down former Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York during his scandal in the late spring of 2011.

April 10: Rick Santorum dropped out of GOP race

The Washington Post revealed Rick Santorum's decision to drop out of the GOP primary race in mid-April. The former senator from Pennsylvania was the last major opponent for front-runner Mitt Romney who became the de facto nominee at that point in the election cycle.

May 17: Romney's "47 percent" remark

Time magazine reveals Yale's top quote of 2012 was made by Romney as he became the presumptive GOP nominee. During a fundraiser in Florida, one supporter secretly video recorded the Republican businessman saying, "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what ... who are dependent on government, who believe that they are victims." Romney then said it wasn't his job to worry about those people. Several missteps like this made the founder of Bain Capital look like he was out of touch with ordinary Americans.

Sept. 11: Libya consulate deaths

Four Americans, including Ambassador John Christopher Stevens, were killed when insurgents stormed and burned the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya. A five-person review board concluded security was woefully short at the facility during a time of unrest in Libya. The State Department in general was held accountable for the lives of the four citizens, in addition to a lack of funding for proper security at the consulate in eastern Libya.

Nov. 6: General election results leaned to left with gay marriage, marijuana

Several election issues leaned to the left as results came in Tuesday night into Wednesday morning on Election Day. The Associated Press reports Maine and Maryland approved ballot measure legalizing gay marriage. Those results were the first time voters approved gay marriage. Washington state and Colorado legalized recreational marijuana use on the same day Americans re-elected Barack Obama.

Dec. 17: Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, died

The longest-serving member of the Senate died at the age of 88. Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, was elected to the Senate in 1962. The Washington Times notes Inouye was the first Japanese-American elected to Congress. Only one senator remains who was first elected during the Vietnam era -- Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.

U.S. urges Egyptians to bridge divisions after constitutional vote

This holiday season is not awesome for Idaho Senator Mike Crapo, a Republican member of the "Gang of Eight" and a Mormon bishop, after police caught him driving drunk in Virginia. This is what happens when you slug down too many egg nogs, hop in your car, run a red light in front of a police cruiser at 12:45 a.m. and then fail "several" sobriety tests. Police took the senator into custody, charged him with a DUI and released him on a $1,000 bail. ...

How does a traffic cop ticket a driverless car?

Rapid progress means self-driving cars are in the fast lane to consumer reality. Is the law up to speed too, asks legal expert Bryant Walker Smith

EVER since the 1930s, self-driving cars have been just 20 years away. Many of those earlier visions, however, depended on changes to physical infrastructure that never came about - like special roads embedded with magnets.

Fast forward to today, and many of the modern concepts for such vehicles are intended to work with existing technologies. These supercomputers-on-wheels use a variety of onboard sensors - and, in some cases, stored maps or communications from other vehicles - to assist or even replace human drivers under specific conditions. And they have the potential to adapt to changes in existing infrastructure rather than requiring it to alter for them.

Infrastructure, however, is more than just roads, pavements, signs and signals. In a broad sense, it also includes the laws that govern motor vehicles: driver licensing requirements, rules of the road and principles of product liability, to name but a few. One major question remains though. Will tomorrow's cars and trucks have to adapt to today's legal infrastructure, or will that infrastructure adapt to them?

Consider the most basic question: are self-driving vehicles legal today? For the US, the short answer is that they probably can be (the long answer runs to nearly 100 pages). Granted, such vehicles must have drivers, and drivers must be able to control their vehicles - these are international requirements that date back to 1926, when horses and cattle were far more likely to be "driverless" than cars. Regardless, these rules, and many others that assume a human presence, do not necessarily prohibit vehicles from steering, braking and accelerating by themselves. Indeed, three US states - Nevada, Florida and most recently California - have passed laws to make that conclusion explicit, at least to a point.

Still unclear, even with these early adopters, is the precise responsibility of the human user, assuming one exists. Must the "driver" remain vigilant, their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road? If not, what are they allowed to do inside, or outside, the vehicle? Under Nevada law, the person who tells a self-driving vehicle to drive becomes its driver. Unlike the driver of an ordinary vehicle, that person may send text messages. However, they may not "drive" drunk - even if sitting in a bar while the car is self-parking. Broadening the practical and economic appeal of self-driving vehicles may require releasing their human users from many of the current legal duties of driving.

For now, however, the appropriate role of a self-driving vehicle's human operator is not merely a legal question; it is also a technical one. At least at normal speeds, early generations of such vehicles are likely to be joint human-computer systems; the computer may be able to direct the vehicle on certain kinds of roads in certain kinds of traffic and weather, but its human partner may need to be ready to take over in some situations, such as unexpected road works.

A great deal of research will be done on how these transitions should be managed. Consider, for example, how much time you would need to stop reading this article, look up at the road, figure out where you are and resume steering and braking. And consider how far your car would travel in that time. (Note: do not attempt this while driving your own car.)

Technical questions like this mean it will be a while before your children are delivered to school by taxis automatically dispatched and driven by computers, or your latest online purchases arrive in a driver-less delivery truck. That also means we have time to figure out some of the truly futuristic legal questions: How do you ticket a robot? Who should pay? And can it play (or drive) by different rules of the road?

Data protection is a more pressing issue. Many cars and trucks available today already collect driving data through onboard sensors, computers and cellular devices. But imagine taking a dozen smartphones, turning on all of their sensors and cameras, linking them to your social media accounts, and affixing them to the inside and outside of your vehicle. That is an understatement of a self-driving vehicle's potential data collection. Because consumer versions of such vehicles do not yet exist, we don't know what data will actually be collected or how it will be transmitted and used. However, legal issues related to disclosure, consent and ownership will mix with important policy questions about the costs and benefits of data sharing. Indeed, some research vehicles in Germany already have privacy notices printed on their sides to warn other road users.

Finally, what happens when things go wrong - or at least not as right as they might? Given that the vast majority of crashes are caused at least in part by human error, self-driving vehicles have huge potential to save lives. But they will not be perfect; after all, humans will remain in the design loop even after they are out of the driving loop. To what standard, then, should these vehicles be held? Must they perform as well as a perfect human driver for any conceivable manoeuvre? Or must they perform merely as well as an average human in a statistical sense? In any case, how should that performance be measured?

These questions will be considered explicitly or implicitly by the regulators who create new standards, the judges and juries that decide who should pay for injuries, and how much, and the consumers who decide what kind of car to buy. The uncertainty that surrounds the answers will affect the speed and price at which these new technologies are introduced.

Why do these questions matter so much? Because ultimately their most meaningful answers will, one hopes, be expressed in terms of lives saved.

Bryant Walker Smith is a fellow at the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School and the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford University, California. His analysis of the legality of self-driving vehicles in the US came out in November (bit.ly/SVCe32)

Sports?.. ? ?Sports Here in Philippines? - foseusib's posterous

Do you like sports? Are you a player or maybe an athlete?Where do you mostly like to play? What sports do you like to play?

Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents? half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor, or if a fault has been called by either the umpire or service judge or, in their absence, the offending player, at any time during the rally.
The shuttlecock (or shuttle) is a feathered (or plastic, mainly in uncompetitive games) projectile whose unique aerodynamic properties cause it to fly differently than the balls used in most racquet sports; in particular, the feathers create much higher drag, causing the shuttlecock to decelerate more rapidly than a ball. Shuttlecocks have a much higher top speed, when compared to other racquet sports. Because shuttlecock flight is affected by wind, competitive badminton is played indoors. Badminton is also played outdoors as a casual recreational activity, often as a garden or beach game.

Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racket that is strung to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over a net into the opponent?s court. The object of the game is to play the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a good return.Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society at all ages.

Swimming is the self propulsion of a person through water or other liquid, for survival, recreation, sport, exercise or other reason. Locomotion is achieved through co-ordinated movement of the limbs, the body, or both. Humans are able to hold their breath underwater and undertake rudimentary locomotive swimming within weeks of birth, as an evolutionary response.Swimming is consistently found to be amongst the top recreational activities undertaken by the public,
and in some countries, swimming lessons are a compulsory part of the educational curriculum. As a formalised sport, swimming features in a range of local, national and international competitions, including featuring in every modern summer Olympics.

Running is a means of terrestrial locomotion allowing humans and other animals to move rapidly on foot. It is simply defined in athletics terms as a gait in which at regular points during the running cycle both feet are off the ground. This is in contrast to walking, where one foot is always in contact with the ground, the legs are kept mostly straight and the center of gravity vaults over the legs in an inverted pendulum fashion.A characteristic feature of a running body from the viewpoint of spring-mass mechanics is that changes in kinetic and potential energy within a stride occur simultaneously, with energy storage accomplished by springy tendons and passive muscle elasticity. The term running can refer to any of a variety of speeds ranging from jogging to sprinting.

Table Tennis, also known as ping-pong, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight, hollow ball back and forth using table tennis rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, players must allow a ball played toward them only one bounce on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. Points are scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. A skilled player can impart several varieties of spin to the ball, altering its trajectory and limiting an opponent?s options to great advantage.

Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players. The aim is to score runs by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and touching a series of four bases arranged at the corners of a 90-foot diamond. Players on the batting team take turns hitting against the pitcher of the fielding team, which tries to stop them from scoring runs by getting hitters out in any of several ways. A player on the batting team can stop at any of the bases and later advance via a teammate?s hit or other means. The teams switch between batting and fielding whenever the fielding team records three outs. One turn at bat for each team constitutes an inning and nine innings make up a professional game. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins.

Association football, commonly known as football or soccer, is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. At the turn of the 21st century, the game was played by over 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world?s most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field of grass or green artificial turf, with a goal in the middle of each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal.In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms (unless the ball is carried out of play, where the field players are required to restart by a throw-in of the game ball), while the field players typically use their feet to kick the ball, occasionally using other parts of their legs, their torso or head. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition. The Laws of the Game were originally codified in England by the Football Association in 1863 and have evolved since then. Association football is governed internationally by FIFA?F?d?ration Internationale de Football Association (English: International Federation of Association Football)?which organises the FIFA World Cup every four years.

The long jump (formerly commonly called the ?broad jump?) is a track and field event in which athletes combine speed, strength, and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a take off point. This event has been an Olympic medal event since the first modern Olympics in 1896 (a medal event for women since 1948) and has a history in the Ancient Olympic Games.

Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team?s court under organized rules.[1] It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since 1964.A scene of Volleyball play in Ervadi village. The complete rules are extensive. But simply, play proceeds as follows: a player on one of the teams begins a ?rally? by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team?s court. The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. The team may touch the ball up to 3 times but individual players may not touch the ball twice consecutively. Typically, the first two touches are used to set up for an attack, an attempt to direct the ball back over the net in such a way that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their court.
The rally continues, with each team allowed as many as three consecutive touches, until either (1): a team makes a kill, grounding the ball on the opponent?s court and winning the rally; or (2): a team commits a fault and loses the rally. The team that wins the rally is awarded a point, and serves the ball to start the next rally. A few of the most common faults include:
causing the ball to touch the ground outside the opponents? court or without first passing over the net;
catching and throwing the ball;
double hit: two consecutive contacts with the ball made by the same player;
four consecutive contacts with the ball made by the same team.
net foul: touching the net during play.
foot fault: the foot crosses over the boundary line when serving
The ball is usually played with the hands or arms, but players can legally strike or push (short contact) the ball with any part of the body.
A number of consistent techniques have evolved in volleyball, including spiking and blocking (because these plays are made above the top of the net, the vertical jump is an athletic skill emphasized in the sport) as well as passing, setting, and specialized player positions and offensive and defensive structures.

Gymnastics is a sport involving the performance of exercises requiring physical strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and balance. Internationally, all of the competitive gymnastic sports are governed by the F?d?ration Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG). Each country has its own national governing body affiliated to FIG. Competitive artistic gymnastics is the best known of the gymnastic sports. It typically involves the women?s events of uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and vault. Men?s events are floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and high bar. Softball is a variant of baseball played with and a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented in 1888 in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground, softbund ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies? baseball. The name softball was given to the game in 1926. A tournament (1933) at the Chicago World?s Fair spurred interest in the game. The Amateur Softball Association of America (founded 1933) governs the game in the United States and sponsors annual sectional and World Series championships. The International Softball Federation regulates rules of play in more than 110 countries, including the United States and Canada. Women?s fast-pitch softball became an Olympic sport in 1996, but it (and baseball) was dropped in 2005 from the 2012 games. Despite the name, the ball used is not soft. It is about 12 in. (30 cm) in circumference (sometimes larger for slow-pitch), which is 3 in. (8 cm) larger than a baseball. The infield in softball is smaller than in baseball; each base is 60 ft (18 m) from the next, as opposed to baseball?s 90 ft. (27 m). There are two types of softball: in the most common, slow-pitch softball, the ball, sometimes larger than the standard 12 in, must arch on its path to the batter, 10 players make up a team, and bunting and stealing are prohibited; in fast-pitch softball the pitch is fast, there are 9 players on a team, and bunting and stealing are permitted. Softball rules vary somewhat from those of baseball. Two major differences are that the ball must be pitched underhand?from 46 ft. (14 m) for men or 43 ft. (12 m)for women as compared with 60.5 ft. (18.4 m) in baseball?and that seven innings instead of nine constitute a regulation game.
