Microsoft launches Outlook.com, a new email service with limited ads, unlimited storage and built-in Skype

Microsoft launches Outlookcom, a new email service with few ads, nearly unlimited storage

So Microsoft launched a new email service today -- not a redesigned version of Hotmail, but a completely new, built-from-the-ground-up service. It's called Outlook.com, and for now, at least, it will exist separately from Hotmail, as Microsoft attempts to distance itself from Hotmail's bad rap. As it happens, the email features are basically the same across the two services, but from a visual standpoint, Outlook.com is everything Hotmail is not: where Hotmail has distracting banners and video ads, Outlook's are discreet. Indeed, you won't find any targeted ads on conversations with individual people (newsletters and such are still fair game). In lieu of those creepy personalized ads, you'll see quick access to Twitter and Facebook, where you can retweet and like things, as well as post comments. Skype integration is coming too (finally!), though that feature isn't live today. Most importantly, though, it brings a fresh, minimal interface designed to lure away Gmail users who wouldn't have otherwise given Hotmail the time of day.

Outlook.com is open to the public starting today. You can create a new account or sign in using an existing Hotmail address. Though it's still in its preview phase, anyone can sign up (read: no invites necessary). Storage is "virtually" unlimited -- Microsoft doesn't want to promise potential spammers a limitless account -- and anyone creating a Microsoft account for the first time gets the usual 7GB of complimentary SkyDrive storage. Hit up that source link if you want check it out yourself, and then head over to our in-depth preview for detailed impressions and screenshots galore.

Drought may mean fewer, smaller animals at fairs

State and county fairs in the sweltering and drought-stricken Midwest may see some skinnier pigs and smaller squash this year.

    7. London cyclists say 'green' Games 'a bit of a joke'

The dozen pigs Greg Marzahl and his 15-year-old daughter are bringing to the Wisconsin State Fair are smaller than those he'd normally show. Marzahl, who had three grand champion pigs last year, said his pigs are around about 15 pounds smaller than the normal 275 pounds. The heat is affecting their virility and appetites, he said.

"We've had a hard time getting them to eat enough to get that condition on them," said Marzahl, who has about 35 show pigs and a few lambs on his 160-acre farm in Oxford.

The Wisconsin fair opens its 11-day run Thursday in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis. State fairs also are set to begin in the next two weeks in Indiana, Iowa and Illinois, which also have been hit hard this summer by unusual heat and drought.

Marzahl still plans to bring his pigs to the fair, expecting his competition will have smaller animals too.

That's been the case at some county fairs that already have been held in the state.

David Laatsch, an agriculture agent with the University of Wisconsin Extension, said he's judge several poultry contests for county fairs this summer and has seen fewer exhibitors and smaller animals. The heat also causes narrower and fewer feathers on poultry, he said.

Laatsch thought some potential exhibitors might have decided to leave their dairy cows home because they were already stressed. Heat disrupts cows' reproductive cycles, and their milk production goes down, he said.

Liana Glavin, secretary of the Adams County Fair Board, has three teenage daughters involved in 4-H. They will bring some of their 12 cows to the county fair this year but leave a mother and her calf behind because of the stress of the heat.

Other exhibitors aren't even coming, she said, although she didn't immediately have figures.

Glavin said the pasture on her farm in Arkdale is completely dried up, when normally the cows can eat until October. Prices for feed have skyrocketed, and Glavin said she doesn't know how much longer she can afford to keep her farm if the prices stay high and the drought continues.

"It's scary but at the same time it's sad," she said. "My kids bought their cows for a 4-H project. We've had the cows for seven years. When you only have 12 of them you are more attached to them."

Astrid Newenhouse, an agriculture scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, judged vegetables and flowers for ages 8 to 18 at this year's Dane County fair, which ended July 22. She said entries were down by about two-thirds.

"I have never seen the drought like that before, this severe before," said Newenhouse, who has judged for 23 years.

The fair had just one gladiola. Typically, it has about two dozen. She said lilies were smaller and not as colorful and all of the vegetables were smaller.

Most years when she asks children to describe their projects, they usually say what they liked best about the plant.

This year, "the first thing they mentioned was how much they watered them," Newenhouse said.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M602dn

In price and capabilities, the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M602dn sits squarely between two Editors' Choice high-volume mono lasers, the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M601dn and the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603dn . Though it didn't quite match the others in output quality in our testing, the M602dn is easy to recommend for its blazing speed, solid feature set, and prodigious duty cycle.

The M602dn measures 15.7 by 16.3 by 20 inches (HWD) and weighs 58 pounds. The front panel has a 4-line monochrome LCD and some basic control buttons: Home, Help, Stop, and Back, plus a 2-way rocker control with center button. To the right is a numeric keypad for entering PIN numbers for password-protected printing; below the panel is a port for a USB thumb drive.

The M602dn has a standard 600-sheet paper capacity, split between a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. It has an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper built in. Additional paper-handling options include a 1,500-sheet input tray ($499 direct), a 500-sheet input tray ($299), a 400-sheet custom media cassette ($229 direct), a 75-sheet envelope feeder ($249), a 500-sheet stacker ($149), a 500-sheet stapler/stacker ($249), and a 500-sheet 5-bin mailbox ($399). Maximum paper capacity is 3,600 sheets.

The M602dn is the middle model of HP's M602 series. The M602n ($999 direct) lacks an automatic duplexer, while the M602x ($1,499 direct) includes the duplexer and adds an additional 500-sheet paper tray.

The M602dn provides USB and Ethernet (including Gigabit), with optional WiFi. I tested it over an Ethernet connection with its driver installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M602dn

Printing Speed
The M602dn's rated print speed is 52 pages per minute, while the M603dn is rated at 62 pages per minute and the M601dn at 45 pages per minute. Unsurprisingly, the M602dn tested at a print speed in between those two models. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 14.1 pages per minute (ppm), while I clocked the M603dn at 14.5 ppm and the M601dn at 13.4 ppm on the same tests. (The rated speeds are based on text-only printing, while our test suite combines text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.) The OKI B730DN , rated at 55 pages per minute, tested a bit slower, at 12 ppm.

Output Quality
Overall, output quality was a bit below par, but still fine for general business use. Text quality was slightly subpar for a laser, but still suitable for most any business uses except for those requiring very small fonts.

The M602dn's graphics quality was slightly subpar for a mono laser, good enough for typical business uses, though I'd hesitate to use it for reports I'd be handing to colleagues I was seeking to impress. It had trouble rendering differences in shading in certain figures. Some illustrations exhibited mild banding, a regular pattern of faint striations?an issue that I didn't see with the other M600-series printers.

Photo quality was typical of mono lasers, good enough for printing out recognizable images from files or Web pages.

The M602dn shares the M603dn's very low running costs (1.2 cents per page). The OKI B730DN's cost per page is 1.4 cents, while the M601dn's is 1.7 cents per page.

In price, speed, and duty cycle, the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M602dn stands between two Editors' Choice models in HP's lineup, the M601dn and M603dn. It shares the M603dn's very low cost per page and its keypad for secure, password-protected printing. It costs $300 more than the M601dn, but with a lower cost per page you'd make up the price difference after printing 60,000 pages. The M602dn's output quality didn?t quite match the other two in our testing, but it is fine for most business needs. This model has a lot to offer, and is worth a close look by businesses looking for a fast mono laser for high-volume printing for a large workgroup.

Mistakes Made to Avoid Filing Bankruptcy

Just about every economist in the world has admitted that the economy is not getting better anytime in the near future. Over the last couple years, the government has spent trillions of dollars to fend off the oncoming recession. What they refuse to admit was the economy was already in recession and heading towards a depression.

Firestorm hits rebel-held Salaheddin in Aleppo

Dawn in the Salaheddin district of Syria's second city Aleppo brought a firestorm with four buildings quickly set ablaze as rebels and foreign fighters battled a long-anticipated army offensive.

"It started at 4:00 am (1:00 GMT) and eight hours later it's still hell. This is madness," an AFP correspondent reported on Saturday.

Four helicopters launched salvoes of rockets before the rebel-held district, which has been surrounded by President Bashar al-Assad's forces, was bombarded by artillery and tanks.

Families fled the fighting, clutching jars of preserves and bottles of milk and water amid food shortages.

Three women sheltering in a Salaheddin basement were all armed with small pistols.

"I would choose death rather than be attacked by the regime soldiers," said one.

Many panic-stricken women and children have fled the quarter since Friday for other parts of the city, leaving behind only groups of men.

The opposition fighting against regime forces includes both Syrian rebels and foreign fighters, who said they belonged to the Liwa al-Tawhid al-Mujahedeen (United Mujahedeen Brigade).

The foreigners told AFP they hailed from from Chechnya, Algeria, Sweden and France. When the correspondent was about to pass the phone to a French fighter, the line went dead.

An attack on the Hamdaniyeh district, where the correspondent was stationed, was repelled.

On the road were three tanks and two armoured vehicles destroyed by the opposition, as well as the bodies of five or six soldiers and four rebels.

A senior Free Syrian Army colonel, Abdel Jabbar al-Oqaidi, told AFP that 100 tanks were massed on the outskirts of Salaheddin.

In the large district in the southwest of the city, rebels had mounted a machinegun on a red pick-up truck with the words "United Mujahedeen Brigade" spray-painted on its side.

A video posted online by activists shows them shooting frantically at the helicopter gunships above, spurred on by the rallying cries of other rebels in the street.

Another video shows flames licking from a building as gunfire crackles in the background and verses from the Koran can be heard from a nearby mosque.

Women and children have been evacuating the Salaheddin area since Friday, seeking refuge in other areas of the city. Those residents who have opted to stay behind have sought refuge in the basements of houses.

According to the AFP correspondent, there is no electricity and water in the city, and food stocks are so low that it is nearly impossible to find bread supplies.

"There are thousands of people in the streets fleeing the bombardment. They're being terrorised by helicopter gunships flying at low altitude," said one activist who identified himself as Amer.

"There's a large number of civilians who have taken refuge in public parks in safer areas, but most took refuge in schools," he told AFP via Skype.

"They cannot get out of town and there is no safe place left for them in Syria," he added.

Until recently, both Aleppo and the capital Damascus had been considered to be relative safe havens.

A Syrian security source told AFP: "Hotspots have been completely blocked off to stop the terrorists from escaping," the term the regime uses when it refers to the rebels.

One militant suggested that regime forces were resorting to subterfuge.

"Some soldiers are passing themselves off as rebels, and putting up checkpoints with the rebel flag to trap fighters taking supplies between secure areas and 'hot' districts," he said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? NBC's Bob Costas noted a controversy over honoring Israeli athletes killed at the Olympics 40 years ago during his coverage of the opening ceremony but stopped short of offering his own protest.

The International Olympic Committee had declined a request to hold a moment of silence during the ceremony to acknowledge the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches killed by Palestinian gunmen in Munich in 1972. Costas called that decision insensitive during an interview this month and indicated he would call for his own moment of silence when Israeli athletes marched into the Olympic Stadium on Friday.

Costas' comments took his bosses by surprise. Jim Bell, executive producer of the NBC's telecast, said this week that Costas hadn't brought it up with him before the interview.

As the athletes marched in Friday, Costas said that IOC President Jacques Rogge led a moment of silence for the late Israelis this week before about 100 people at the Athlete's Village.

"Still, for many, tonight with the world watching is the true time and place to remember those who were lost and how and why they died," Costas said.

After a five-second pause, NBC cut to a commercial.

Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, which promotes Jewish causes, said he appreciated Costas bringing up the issue, though he didn't expect a moment of silence.

"He established a sense of history and decency and sensitivity, I would say, in the tradition of Jim McKay," Foxman said. The late McKay is the former ABC sportscaster who anchored coverage of the 1972 attack.

Syrian forces pound Aleppo and Damascus

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Damascus and Syria's second biggest city, Aleppo, came under shell fire on Thursday as troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad stepped up efforts to crush rebels threatening the government's two main power centers.

One of the most senior figures to defect from Assad's inner circle, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, put himself forward as someone who could help unite the fragmented opposition inside and outside Syria on a blueprint for a transfer of power.

A bomb attack that killed four of Assad's closest lieutenants last week prompted predictions among his enemies that the 46-year-old president's time in power was drawing to a close.

But in the days that have followed that attack, Assad's forces have noticeably toughened their response to the armed revolt, with fixed-wing combat aircraft seen in action over Aleppo and rebel fighters said by opposition sources to have been summarily executed on the streets of Damascus.

Residents in the capital reported a shell landing in southern districts every minute on Thursday morning. Helicopters were attacking the Hajar-al-Aswad district, one of the last rebel strongholds in the city after days of street fighting, opposition activists said.

After a major assault on rebels in Damascus last week, the army has turned to Aleppo, reinforcing troops there with an armored column that had been operating in a northern province, apparent evidence of the government's aim not to lose control of Syria's commercial capital, a city of 2.5 million.

Fierce clashes raged in the early hours of Thursday in Aleppo, and an activist said rebels now controlled half of the city, a claim that could not be independently verified.

"There was shelling this morning on the Salaheddine and Mashhad districts," said Aleppo activist Abu Hisham. "Now it has stopped, but helicopters are buzzing overhead."

Activists said 24 people were killed in fighting in and around Aleppo on Wednesday, swelling a national death toll of about 18,000 since the revolt against Assad began 16 months ago.

In the Syrian capital, a resident in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp reported heavy shelling, particularly near the southern Hajar al-Aswad district.

SHELLS LANDING EVERY MINUTE

She said the army seemed to be targeting sites on the edges of the camp, firing shells every minute. The bombardment started around 7 a.m. (0400 GMT) and was still going three hours later.

As hostilities have intensified in the north, in and around Aleppo, Turkey closed its border posts to commercial traffic on Wednesday, but not to refugees fleeing Syria.

At the Syrian town of Azaz, a few miles south of the Turkish border, rebels appeared in control after heavy clashes over the past month in which they succeeded in driving government forces out of what had become a rubble-strewn ghost town, a Reuters correspondent who visited the town said.

Military experts believe an overstretched Syrian army is pulling back to concentrate on Aleppo and Damascus, while leaving outlying areas in the hands of rebels.

In its most recent comment on the fighting, state-run Syrian television said on Wednesday that government troops were imposing security and stability in and around Aleppo.

"The terrorists are suffering terrible losses. Groups of them are throwing their weapons away and giving themselves up. Others are fleeing for the Turkish border," the television said.

Assad himself has not spoken in public in more than a week since the Damascus bomb attack on his inner circle, confining himself to appearing at formal televised events.

TRANSITION ROLE

General Tlas, a former friend of Assad's who could play a role in any transition of power, said he had not defected from Syria in order to play a leadership role.

"I am discussing with ... people outside Syria to reach a consensus with those inside," he told Thursday's edition of the Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat.

"I left (Syria)...to try to help the best I can to unite the honorable people inside and outside Syria to set out a road map to get Syria out of this crisis".

Tlas, who is in Jeddah and has been interviewed by a Saudi-owned newspaper and a television station, appeared to have tacit Saudi support for his stance.

The general, a Sunni Muslim member of Assad's mostly Alawite inner circle and a senior officer in the Republican Guards, defected earlier this month.

"I will cooperate with every honorable person who wants to rebuild Syria, be it the National Council or the (rebel) Free Syria Army," he said.

Western powers have been calling for Assad to be removed from office for months, but they fear that he will fight to the end, raising the risk of sectarian warfare spreading across one of the world's most volatile regions.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, addressing the Bosnian parliament in Sarajevo, said the world must unite to end the "slaughter" in Syria, recalling the inertia of the United Nations in 1995 during the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia.

At the U.N. Security Council, members blamed each other for rising violence in Syria. Western states pledged to seek an end to the conflict outside the world body, while Russia warned of "likely catastrophic consequences" with that approach.

Russia, an ally of Syria, and China have repeatedly blocked Western-backed Security Council resolutions on Syria.

Joe Arpaio's (ahem) Legal Scholar Brett "Shut Up" Palmer and ...

Early this morning, I obtained what I was looking for: A legal document highly-valued by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, researched by a scholar of such repute that he's known for telling elected officials to, "Shut up!"

The "scholar" in question is Sergeant Brett Palmer, a supervisor in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's notorious, racial-profilin' Human Smuggling Unit.

No, he doesn't have a law degree, or any legal training to speak of. But he does have a direct line to high MCSO muckety-mucks, including HSU Lieutenant Joe Sousa, Deputy Chief Brian Sands, and Arpaio himself.

See, Palmer took the stand yesterday in Melendres v. Arpaio, the big ACLU lawsuit that's trying to bring Arpaio to heel on his pattern and practice of discriminatory policing. There, Palmer discussed his involvement in a couple of major scandals that have hit the MCSO concerning its Hispanic-hunting ways.

One was a direct embarrassment to Arpaio himself, when Arpaio used misinformation Palmer had forwarded up the chain of command after, Palmer says, Sands asked him to do some "legal research" for the stone-faced deputy chief.

Palmer is the same brain surgeon who participated in a press conference in 2009 where he and other Arpaio employees blasted public officials who had dared to criticize Arpaio's immigration policies.

"We're telling these people in power such as [then Phoenix Mayor] Phil Gordon, [Maricopa County Supervisor] Mary Rose Wilcox and [then Mesa] Police Chief Gascon, shut up!" Palmer practically spat at the time. "They're ignorant. They don't know what it is they're talking about. They don't have their facts straight."

In other words, Palmer isn't the sharpest pencil in the drawer. So what does it say about the guy who asks him to do legal research and passes this "research" along to his boss, the most powerful lawman in the county?

Palmer admitted that he "cut and pasted" info from a website to send to Sands, and the info was, unknown to him at the time, incorrect. The material cited was old, and said that state and local cops have the right to enforce federal immigration statutes without prior approval of the "INS."

That mention of the no-longer-extant INS should have been a tip off for Palmer and his superiors. But they were eager to make the case that local law enforcement has "inherent authority" to question folks about immigration status.

In fact, that is incorrect. As federal Judge G. Murray Snow pointed out in his decision granting Melendres class action status, and as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has held, "Local law enforcement officers...do not have the `inherent authority' to investigate civil immigration violations."

Chick-fil-A Doesn't Belong In Politics ? CBS Pittsburgh

The Right Politics

Politics is becoming a part of everyday life in the United States, even for those people who claim they don?t like politics or won?t allow politics to be discussed at their dinner table. Unfortunately for those persons, politics are infiltrating most every part of America?s fabric ? most recently the huge portion of the fabric that includes American businesses.

Most recently, a business that has entrenched itself in politics is the Chick-fil-A restaurant chain due to the personal opinion given by its president, Dan Cathy. Since last week when Cathy said he supports traditional marriage and no other form of marriage, the loud protests and soft acceptances of his comments have gone viral ? and more. After Twitter, Facebook, and other forms of social media had their initial say, the politicizing of the poultry restaurant business began ? literally.

After Cathy was trounced for giving his opinion on the controversial subject, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was quick to add his approval of the fast food chain?s assertion that the Biblical form of marriage was just. Huckabee has even called upon supporters of what Cathy opined to participate in an ?Appreciation Day? on August 1st. How well that call for patronizing Chick-fil-A goes is yet to be seen.

On the other end of the political spectrum, there are politicians like Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno who are extremely opposed to the message delivered via Cathy?s outspokenness. The Chicago politician is now blocking the opening of a Chick-fil-A restaurant in his Northwest Side community. In Chicago, aldermen have what is referred to as ?alderman?s privilege? which gives Moreno the power to block the business from proceeding.

The area of Chicago of which Moreno is alderman ? the 1st Ward which includes the Logan Square neighborhood ? is becoming more and more contemporary with its recent developments and would have welcomed a Chick-fil-A with open arms and pocketbooks before now. At this point, however, Cathy and his Chick-fil-A can forget it.

While some have asked Alderman Moreno about freedom of speech, the alderman simply responds that zoning is not a right ? and that is where Moreno?s ?alderman?s privilege? and authority have come into play.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has appropriately joined Moreno?s move to block the restaurant in Chicago by saying that having that restaurant ? particularly in Moreno?s ward where many gays, lesbians, and trans-genders are in residence ? wouldn?t be a successful business for the city because people simply aren?t going to go there now. Emanuel added that he wouldn?t want the business in Chicago because Chicago is open to all its neighbors ? and such prejudice against some of the city?s citizens is not wanted in Chicago.

Though I rarely agree with Emanuel, I must admit that this time he is right on the mark.

Surprisingly, Chick-fil-A was founded in another populous American city, Atlanta. Where does an otherwise successful business person from a big American city get the idea that he can blast the GLAAD community ? or any segment of society ? and still have a profitable business at the end of the day?

Chick-fil-A now claims via Facebook that the restaurant treats every patron with ?honor, dignity and respect ? regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender?. This contradictory statement from the restaurant chain is obviously not going to carry much weight with those it has offended and those who totally disapprove of a business giving their opinion on same-sex marriage at all.

First of all, what was Dan Cathy thinking when he thought that anyone gives a damn about what he thinks about same-sex marriage? Second of all, did he forget he heads a company that could lose many customers ? possibly his entire business ? when he made his ?blurt-ation?? Did he actually believe that spewing his controversial belief on an otherwise social, political, and religious issue wasn?t going to have a negative effect on his business? Did he feel he had some moral or religious need to give his opinion?

Whatever Cathy?s reasoning, he has a lot to learn about the separation of his business and the unnecessary preaching of his morality. Unfortunately for his business and the many people who depend on him for a financial livelihood, he is most likely learning his lesson too late.

Tropical Parks Fail to Protect Animals and Plants [Slide Show]

ENDANGERED PREDATOR: Even forest reserves have not been enough to prevent the decline of the tiger in countries like India. Image: ? Ashish Gautamm / Flickr

India's Supreme Court has temporarily banned tourism in tiger reserves. The problem? All those hotels and shops built within the protected areas for the tourists are cutting down on actual forest habitat for the endangered big cats. In addition, local governments have failed to create buffer zones of slightly less degraded forest around the parks to enable the rare tigers to thrive.

The tall trees of such a protected swath of tropical forest often rise like a wall from a denuded hillside or plain. Such stands of relatively untouched trees are meant as shelters for the rich array of plant and animal species, such as the tiger, that once spread throughout vast regions of tropical jungle. But a new scientific survey that largely agrees with the Indian court's ruling finds that the more than 16,000 independent parks and reserves around the world protected by humans from humans may not prove a long-term refuge. Interviews with scientists and other experts to assess the relative health of some 60 protected areas of tropical forest in 36 different nations reveal that roughly half are continuing to lose unique species of plants and animals.

View a slide show of some of the threats to reserves and unique species.

The problem appears to be the degradation of surrounding forestland that remains unprotected, according to the research of some 261 ecologists, biologists and other scientists published online in Nature on June 25 (Scientific American is a part of Nature Publishing Group).

The scientists surveyed their colleagues to assess the relative health of more than 30 different groups of species from apex predators, like the tiger, to vines and plants that grow on top of other plants in African, American and Asian reserves. The reserves themselves ranged in size from as little as 160 hectares to 3.6 million hectares?but size was no predictor of health.

Instead, the most important thing that determined the health of these areas was the state of the lands surrounding them. Eighty-five percent of the reserves saw the surrounding lands cleared of trees or suffering from other significant impacts. In addition, many reserves themselves saw their own jungle canopies thin out: Trees were cut down for removal and sale or to make room for hotels or even increased hunting.

As a result, the number of exotic plants and animals as well as freshwater fish declined in most reserves. But some species benefited, including trees that specialize in filling disturbed ecosystems as well as human diseases that emerge from interactions with wild animals?so-called zoonoses such as Ebola. "The fates of tropical protected areas will be determined by environmental changes both within and around the reserves," the researchers wrote in Nature, noting that, essentially, protected areas needed to be better protected. "It is not enough to confine such efforts to reserve interiors while ignoring their surrounding landscapes."

More prostate cancer test advice for some men

There?s more advice on the contentious issue of prostate cancer screening: A leading group of cancer specialists says the decision hinges in part on a man?s life expectancy.

Doctors should discuss the possible pros and cons of those PSA blood tests with men expected to live longer than another 10 years, the American Society of Clinical Oncology recommended Monday.

That?s a contrast from guidelines issued this spring by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which recommended against routine PSA screening for all men. That government advisory panel found little if any evidence that PSA testing saves lives ? and said too many men suffer impotence, incontinence, heart attacks, occasionally even death from treatment of tiny tumors that never would have killed them.

In its own review, the oncologists? group ASCO concluded that doctors should discourage PSAs for men with less than 10-year life expectancy, for those very reasons.

But it didn?t find the evidence as clear-cut for younger or healthier men ? and released a step-by-step guide, in easy-to-understand language, to help them and their primary care physicians understand the controversy and make an informed decision. The new advice echoes guidelines from the American Cancer Society.

?This is a gray area of medicine,? said Dr. Ethan Basch, a prostate cancer specialist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center who co-chaired ASCO?s review. ?That?s made this a very challenging discussion, and a very challenging decision.?

The guide makes clear that before men decide to have the PSA test, they should think about how they?d react to a suspicious result, and all the testing and treatment decisions that would entail.

Too much PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, in the blood only sometimes signals prostate cancer is brewing. It also can mean a benign enlarged prostate or an infection. Only a biopsy can tell. Most men will get prostate cancer if they live long enough. Some 240,000 U.S. men a year are diagnosed with it, most with slow-growing tumors that carry a very low risk of morphing into the kind that can kill.

Two huge studies, one in Europe and one in the U.S., evaluated whether routine screening can save lives. Without screening, about 5 in every 1,000 men die of prostate cancer over 10 years. The European study found PSA testing might prevent one of those deaths, while the U.S. study found no difference.

ASCO?s patient guide highlights the European study results.

Britain awards 4.5 billion pounds trains deal to Hitachi

LONDON/TOKYO (Reuters) - Britain has approved a 4.5 billion pound ($7 billion) contract with a consortium led by Japan's Hitachi to build 92 intercity trains at a newly-built factory in northern England, in a deal which will create more than 900 UK jobs.

The Agility consortium, made up by Hitachi and British construction company John Laing, has long been the preferred bidder for the contract, which the Japanese firm had originally hoped to seal by December 2009.

Hitachi will assemble 596 railway carriages at the factory to be sited in County Durham in north east England, Britain's Department for Transport said on Wednesday.

The deal will create 730 skilled jobs at the factory, with a further 200 jobs during the site's construction, said British Transport Secretary Justine Greening.

The company will also locate its European rail research and development facilities at the site, a move which would enhance the factory's ability to win further rail contracts across Europe, Britain's Department for Transport said.

The contract has been seen as key to Hitachi's ability to break the dominance of Germany's Siemens, Canada's Bombardier and France's Alsthom in the global railway market.

Hitachi said it aimed to begin production as early as 2016 at a rate of 35 rail cars per month.

The trains will replace existing diesel-powered trains dateing back to the 1970s and 1980s. The new rolling stock will be a mixture of all-electric and "bi-mode" diesel-electric trains.

Comp Benefit - Injured Workers Law Firm

In a Workers? Comp claim, a Richmond Workers? Compensation lawyer is beneficial in receiving your just allowances.

The goal of the employer?s insurance carrier is not necessarily to compensate employees fairly. In fact, insurance adjusters may try different tactics to settle a claim quickly and inexpensively, or to deny a claim entirely.

One of these tactics is to get a recorded statement from you. This may be done shortly after the injury when you are on pain medications, under stress, or unsure of your injury?s extent. Insurance adjusters may use leading questions, so your words will hurt your Workers? Comp claim.

Another method insurance companies use is to send money automatically. Most workers assume the insurance company is paying their claim. The problem is if a claim for benefits form is not completed, injured workers will stop receiving payments after Virginia?s statute of limitations is reached. Then employees will be unable to file for Workers? Comp, and will lose their full benefit amount.

Also, be careful about signing forms sent to you from the insurance company. There are cases where insurance adjusters leave out injuries or miscalculate weekly wages. If you sign agreement papers with mistakes like these, not all of your injuries may be covered and you may not receive compensation for your weekly earnings.

Apple earnings preview: Big quarter expected for iPad, iPhone forecasts vary

On Tuesday Apple will report earnings for its third quarter of fiscal 2012, and analysts expect the iPad will be in a position to set new records, while consensus on the iPhone is more divided.

Generally speaking, most investors believe Apple will report sales of between 25 million and 27 million iPhones, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Mac sales are pegged at 4 million, while iPad sales are harder to nail down, but he believes expectations are between 15 million and 16 million.

If those iPad numbers hold true, it would put Apple in a position to beat its previous record of 15 million iPads reached in the holiday quarter of 2012. The number would also handily best the 9.25 million iPads sold in the year-ago quarter.

Munster believes Apple will report sales of about 16 million iPads when its earnings arrive after the market closes at 4 p.m. Eastern tomorrow. A conference call featuring Apple executives will occur at 5 p.m. Eastern, and AppleInsider will have full live coverage.

Meanwhile, Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank and Shaw Wu of Sterne Agee are both calling for iPad sales of 15 million in the June quarter.

One of the more bullish iPad forecasts for the quarter came from Charlie Wolf of Needham & Company. He said earlier this month that he believes Apple will report record shattering sales of 20 million iPads in the June quarter, and he believes it's "only a matter of time" before iPad shipments exceed the iPhone.

For the iPhone, Whitmore has estimated 30 million iPhones, but cautioned that number could end up being "light" by as much as 2 million units. Munster is also more bullish than most analysts on Wall Street, and believes the number could be closer to 28 million or 29 million units, while White has called for sales of 28 million iPhones.

Wu said his industry checks have indicated iPhone sales will more likely be in the 26 to 28 million range, and he has accordingly forecast Apple to report sales of 27 million. He believes the slowdown in sales is attributable to anticipation of Apple's next-generation iPhone as opposed to weak demand.

As for the Mac, Wu has forecast sales of 4.3 million units, which he said is at the upper end of Wall Street expectations between 4 million and 4.3 million. Whitmore's projection is slightly above the market, as Deutsche Bank has advised its clients Apple has likely sold 4.4 million Macs during the June quarter.

Analysts are already looking to the future for Apple, and in particular have their eyes on the holiday quarter, when they expect the next iPhone will launch. Even with an anticipated sales lull in the September quarter as customers hold out for the next-generation iPhone, Wall Street analysts believe Apple's strong product momentum will continue going forward.

"Along with continued strong demand for iPad and Macs (spurred by the introduction of the new iPad, new MacBook Pro and Air lineups, etc.), we expect these product cycles to maintain Apple's momentum into 2013," Whitmore wrote.
