4 Ways to Save Money on Vehicle Repairs - Auto Repair - DIY

DIY Auto RepairVehicle maintenance and repairs can be extremely costly and at times, daunting?but you can cut costs if you?re a little creative and don?t mind getting your hands dirty.

By using all available resources, you can save money on parts and labor and keep your budget on track. Here are four great ways to save money on repairs that are commonly overlooked.

1. DIY (Do it yourself). There?s this myth going around that cars are too sophisticated for the home mechanic to repair, probably because auto dealers and repair shops alike tell anyone who will listen that cars are more complicated today than they ever were before.

While it?s true that cars are more complicated, so are the tools we use to diagnose them. For less than the cost of a pair of designer jeans, you can buy your very own diagnosis tool. This tool can plugin to your vehicle?s data port, get the trouble codes from the engine computer, and then you can look up these codes on your home computer to see what the problem might be. While you won?t be able to fix every problem you encounter, you can take care of the basics like a bad O2 sensor, clogged fuel filter, etc.

In other words, don?t believe the hype ? you can fix your own car. All you need is the right tools.

2. Shop at the Junkyard. Once upon a time, searching for used parts at junkyards was commonplace. Today, with the typical consumer being reluctant to do their own vehicle repairs, junkyards are an excellent place to find parts. In fact, often times you don?t even have to go and look ? you can just call your local salvage yard (another term for junkyard), tell them what you need, and they?ll quote you a price. Some yards will even remove the part for you for a small fee.

The benefits of finding used parts at your local junkyard extends beyond your wallet. In addition to saving money, you?re recycling parts, and that?s good for the environment.

3. Shop for Discount OEM Parts Online. Saving money on vehicle repairs is as easy as typing a few words into the search engine of your computer. This is a great way to compare prices as well, to ensure that the best price is obtained. If, for example, you compare the price of a factory Toyota part online to the price you get at your local Toyota dealer, you?re likely to find the online retailer offers a better deal.

4. Call your local automotive trade school or technical college. If your vehicle needs an especially complicated and/or expensive repair, you might consider calling your local automotive school. There?s a chance they would be willing to repair your car for the cost of the parts, mostly because a complicated and/or expensive repair is a good teaching tool. While you shouldn?t get your hopes up about a free engine rebuild, it?s worth investigating.
