Much like fate, the iPhone 5 is a cruel mistress.
On one hand, she is a beautiful phone, her cool metal curves pleasant to the touch, fitting perfectly into the palm.
On the other hand, she?ll mistakenly direct you to phantom tolls in downtown Boston.
There?s the siren call of subtle upgrades like improved video calling and stabilization ? and something called 4G that many Apple devotees agree she must?ve invented.
And yet she taunts you with her white earbuds that were promised to be improved but seem, alas, the same.
Such is the abusive relationship we are in with Apple. Some are still in denial of this dynamic, like those who spent days camped outside retail stores and acted grateful as Apple employees gave them free hot beverages after a long night.
After all, Apple wouldn?t be as happy if you?d ordered your new iPhone 5 online and had it shipped to your doorstep, right?
The rewards for this sacrifice abound, like an upgrade to your contacts list, for instance. Facebook and Twitter information is now pulled into your address book just as Android and Windows phones have done for some time.
Perhaps you downloaded iOS 6 to your iPhone 4S, and it?s like a new phone. But perhaps you also had already pre-ordered the iPhone 5 for $199 or more. You must, in that case, try futilely to sell your (old) new phone on Craigslist or Ebay. And eventually give up and keep it, along with your 30-pin dock accessories, for posterity.
I missed the one-hour window for pre-order sales last week, so I decided instead to head to a Verizon premium retailer yesterday in hopes of getting the new iPhone. I arrived at 6 a.m. and was the first in line at the Bunker Hill Mall. Another man arrived shortly before the store?s opening at 8 a.m. and we got the only two 16GB iPhones that the store had been shipped.
The new iPhone 5 comes with a speedy A6 chip, a lighter frame, expanded 4-inch ?Retina? display, the new Passbook ticket and payment app ? and a special kind of indignity.
