Future Ford cars to balance MyFord Touch with old-fashioned buttons

Ford to balance MyFord Touch with oldfashioned knobs in future cars

While Ford's MyFord Touch is a popular option for tech-savvy drivers, it's not always the most intuitive -- some complain that basic tasks, like radio tuning, are relatively awkward. The company is very aware of the feedback, as it's now supplementing the touch controls with "traditional" buttons and knobs. Both the latest F-150 and future vehicles will reflect the hybrid approach. Ford is still giving touchscreens some love with a MyFord Touch update due this summer, but it's clear that the company will keep one foot in the analog world for a while longer.

Review: Minus pretense, Tim McGraw an evolving, revolving act ...

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Tim McGraw performs at USANA, Friday, June 14, 2013.

If Tim McGraw ever needs a hip replacement, he?ll have the music to fall back on.

With substance vastly overpowering flash, the country legend was in top form Friday night at USANA Amphitheatre, unleashing a set of hits spanning 20 years. And while some of the loudest cheers of the night came when McGraw pulled off a brown leather jacket to reveal chiseled upper arms, and each time he sent his large gold belt buckle into orbit with smooth, metronomic gyrations, McGraw should be allowed those teasing indulgences. Beyond moves usually reserved for pole dancing workouts, it was two hours with few frills.

Tim McGraw at USANA

Country singer Tim McGraw brought his ?Two Lanes of Freedom? tour to Utah. Brantley Gilbert and Love and Theft opened the show.

When ? Friday, June 14

Where ? USANA Amphitheatre, 5125 S. 6400 West, West Valley City

As country shows become pyrotechnics blowouts with a live soundtrack, McGraw has gone the other way. He had a band, a guitar (sometimes), a four-story video screen and whole lot of hits.

McGraw has been at this a long time. He turned 46 last month and he?s either learned that he doesn?t need to cover anything up - seriously, we?re moving on from his physique now - with distracting tricks or he quit giving a damn. With his voice just vulnerable enough on the high notes, and his smile with its familiar, right-of-center tilt McGraw was appropriately charming and flirtatious with an adoring audience.

McGraw played nearly every hit, opening with "Where the Green Grass Grows" and powering through "Down on the Farm," "How Bad Do You Want It?," and "Everywhere" before even daring to dip into his newest stuff, from "Two Lanes of Freedom," his 12th studio album released in February.

His No. 1-hit duet, "Highway Don?t Care," with Taylor Swift was awkward with McGraw singing live, and Swift only present through the magic of HD. She, of course, sounded better with studio rendering, but the power of the song, appropriately wistful and lovely, took care of any imperfections.

And while new songs such as "Mexicoma" - money lyric: "You pulled the plug on what I thought was love, but I got just enough juice to forget about you and squeeze this lime" - are far from McGraw?s top hits, alongside his classics, you?re willing to go along for the ride.

The best thing about McGraw, live or through speakers, is the sincerity of the product. He?s not jingoistic, he doesn?t overutilize beer, coonhounds and pickup trucks to pander to the country crowd - although "Truck Yeah" is so cheekily, obnoxiously, mainstream that it was tough not to sing along by the time McGraw sang the chorus for the final time, closing the set and ending the night.

Crews battling Colo. wildfire hold flames in check

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Crews battling the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history say they were better prepared to take on the flames because of lessons learned fighting last year's Waldo Canyon Fire, a similarly devastating blaze that devoured hundreds of homes and killed two people only a few miles away.

When the thickly wooded rural region north of Colorado Springs known as the Black Forest began to burn this week, authorities swiftly evacuated tens of thousands of people from a swath of land larger than the Denver metropolitan area.

They immediately began hand-counting destroyed houses to get information out to nervous homeowners. And they rushed federal troops and aircraft into action, cutting the red tape that had grounded those resources a year ago as smoke clouds billowed over Colorado.

Within an hour, El Paso County had its emergency operations center up and running and summoned aircraft from nearby Peterson Air Force base. Rep. Doug Lamborn called the federal center in Idaho that coordinates western firefighting to speed up the process of clearing the planes. Gov. John Hickenlooper mobilized the Colorado National Guard, and troops began to help secure the rapidly growing evacuation zone.

"We've done it all before and so there was no question," said Nicola Sapp, El Paso County budget officer. "Everybody jumped right in."

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Before the fire got out of hand, authorities evacuated people miles away, sending deputies door-to-door to ensure everyone left. They remembered the speed at which last year's fire spread.

"That's one thing I'll never forget ? how fast that Waldo Canyon Fire moved," said El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa, who was bowled over by how rapidly help arrived this week.

The latest blaze raced through the rural reaches of the metro area, doubling in size overnight and charring at least 400 homes. The bodies of two people were found inside their garage Thursday, their car doors open as if they had been about to flee.

Some Waldo Canyon evacuees endured days without knowing whether their houses survived. So Maketa sent deputies in at night to survey neighborhoods. It was a painstaking, risky process as ashes smoldered around them while they strained to determine the addresses of charred properties. About 24 hours later, the department began releasing the addresses of houses that were lost.

It might take two weeks to get a perfect count, but the sheriff decided to err on the side of rapidly releasing information.

"I'd rather disappoint one person, but get it right to another thousand," Maketa said.

By Friday, firefighters reported some progress. The blaze was only 5 percent contained, and could take another devastating turn at any moment. In a sign of the quick improvement, authorities lifted evacuation orders in a northern slice of Colorado Springs, the state's second largest city, which had impacted 1,000 homes.

Firefighters were also aided by some rainfall in the burn area.

Hickenlooper toured the zone and said he was happily drenched.

"I'm soaking wet and I'm a little chilly, but I've never been so happy to say this," he said.

The fire zone remained at 25 square miles, thanks to lighter winds and firefighters' efforts to stamp out flare-ups. Sheriff's deputies patrolling for looters directed crews to dozens of hot spots.

For the first time since the fire started Tuesday, authorities seemed optimistic that they could stop it.

"Hopefully if we can build off the success we had last night, we can start to turn the corner," said Rich Harvey, the incident commander.

Harvey is the federal official who also oversaw the battle against the Waldo Canyon Fire. He said it was just coincidence that Colorado Springs saw two such destructive blazes in 12 months.

"This could happen anywhere," he said.

Still, the coincidence is a reminder of the challenges of tamping down wildfires across the West, especially with growing populations, rising temperatures and a historic drought.

Developers describe Black Forest as the largest contiguous stretch of ponderosa pine in the United States ? a thick, wide carpet of vegetation rolling down from the Rampart Range that thins out to the high grasslands of Colorado's eastern plains. Once home to rural towns and summer cabins, it is now dotted with million-dollar homes and gated communities as a result of the state's population boom over the past two decades.

Waldo Canyon was one of the last subdivisions in Colorado Springs, bumping up directly against the pine-clad wilderness of the Rocky Mountains.

Other fires burned in Colorado, California and New Mexico. A southern New Mexico fire reached the historic mining town of Kingston, but an official said crews protected buildings there.

In Canon City, 50 miles southwest of Black Forest, the 5-square-mile Royal Gorge Fire was 40 percent contained and evacuation orders were lifted. Royal Gorge Bridge & Park officials said the park lost 48 buildings. The park's suspension bridge above the Arkansas River is still up. An aerial tram was destroyed.

A 350-acre fire sparked by lightning in Rocky Mountain National Park is 30 percent contained.

Asus Transformer Book TX300C

As detachable laptop/tablet hybrids go, some of the best laptop designs are marred by the inclusion of clunky, kludgey docking hinges, a necessary evil when wedding a tablet to a keyboard. While it does have a docking hinge, the Asus Transformer Book TX300C manages to come off as far more elegant thanks to a refined design and an great blend of performance and battery life. But, just like a fine steak can be easily marred by single piece of gristle, the Transformer Book TX300C has a couple of flaws that I'm still chewing on.

Design
The Transformer Book is Asus's first detachable hybrid, and it is a beauty. Borrowing the brushed metal aesthetics of the Asus ZenBook UX51Vz-DH71, and adding the high-resolution touchscreen of the Android-based Transformer Pad Infinity, the Transformer Book TX300 is a gorgeous system. The 13.3-inch, 1,920-by-1,080 resolution screen looks good from all angles, and with 10-finger tracking, it handles every tap and touch with ease.

The tablet itself is slim, but a bit heavy, measuring 0.43 by 13.3 by 8.4 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 2.1 pounds. When docked, the basic dimensions remain the same, but it doubles the thickness to 0.94 inch and adds two additional pounds (4.2 pounds total). That's a tad heavy?the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 is only 3.4 pounds, while the Samsung ATIV SmartPC Pro 700T has a total weight of 3.5 pounds. Some of this weight can be attributed to the sturdy metal construction?it certainly feels substantial when you pick it up?but the 500GB hard drive and second battery have something to do with it, too. The docking keyboard has a full-size chiclet keyboard, and the typing experience is virtually identical to that of the Asus UX51Vz-DH71.

The docking hinge is serviceable, but connecting it is neither smooth or intuitive. Lining up the dock and connector is mostly guesswork, even with an alignment guide on the hinge. Most importantly, actual connectivity when docked seemed to be hit or miss. More than once I docked the tablet, but found the keyboard portion didn't connect without removing and re-connecting the tablet. That said, once the tablet is properly connected, the hinge strikes a good balance between stiffness and flexibility, letting you tap and touch the screen with minimal screen wobble, but still open it in laptop mode without having to pry it open.

Both tablet and docking keyboard feature SonicMaster speakers, made in partnership with Bang & Olufsen. While the audio quality is some of the clearest I've heard on a detachable hybrid, the volume seemed a bit quiet.

Features
The tablet half of the Transformer Book TX300C is equipped with a stereo headset jack, micro HDMI output, and a micro SD card slot, along with Asus' magnetic power connector and proprietary docking port. On the docking keyboard you'll add to that list a full-size SD card slot, a mini DisplayPort, a compact Gigabit LAN connection, and two USB 3.0 ports. You'll also find a magnetic power connector, similar to the one seen on the Editors' Choice Microsoft Surface Pro. The Transformer Book TX300C features 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, and a front-facing HD webcam. On the back, there's a 5-megapixel camera for shooting video and snapshots.

The tablet itself boasts a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD), but this is significantly bolstered by a second 500GB, 5,400 hard drive in the docking keyboard. The Transformer Book TX300C is delightfully bloatware-free, as Asus only installs a handful of branded utilities, like Asus WebStorage (with 5GB of free online storage), Asus Instant ON (to keep boot times short), and Power4Gear Hybrid (for battery management). The only other apps and programs are Microsoft Office 2013, Skype, and the usual collection of Microsoft games and apps. Asus covers the Transformer Book TX300C with a generous two-year warranty.

Performance
Asus Transformer Book TX300C The Transformer Book TX300C may be slim, but it packs a lot of punch, thanks to a 1.9GHz Intel Core i7-3517U dual-core processor with 4GB of RAM. Though it lagged a bit in PCMark 7, scoring 4,275 points?as compared to the Microsoft Surface Pro (4,768) or the Dell XPS 12 (4,638)?it still led the category in both Cinebench (2.47 points) and Photoshop CS6 (4 minutes 47 seconds). It's worth noting, however, that this leading performance is not what you'll see when you're out on the road, using the tablet alone. We saw remarkably different performance results when running on battery power, with a PCMark score of 2,348 points and a paltry Cinebench score of 0.79 points. For best performance, stick close to a wall outlet.

Asus Transformer Book TX300C

The graphics performance was a tad underwhelming, completing 3DMark 11 with scores of 953 (Entry) and 182 (Extreme). Most competitors completed the same test above 1,000 points at Entry settings and above 200 at Extreme settings. Regardless, none of this category of hybrid tablets has been able to support gaming. It will, however, be more than adequate for all of your web browsing and video streaming needs.

The Transformer Book TX300C also did well in our battery tests, lasting 4 hours 47 minutes, only slightly short of the 5 hours claimed by Asus. Add in the secondary battery in the docking keyboard, however, and you'll find that time stretched to 7:35?long enough to take you through a full day of work or school without ever plugging it in.

While there are plenty of things to like about the Asus Transformer Book TX300C?like a beautiful 1080p touch screen, a long-lasting dual-battery setup, and a powerful Core i7 processor?there were still a few problems. The touchy docking connection made swapping between tablet and laptop modes frustrating, and the dramatic difference in performance between battery power and AC power are too big to let slide. The Microsoft Surface Pro remains our Editors' Choice with similar performance, a lower price tag, and easier portability.

Global warming: Not too late to rein in climate change, group says

The International Energy Agency urges governments to take interim steps to reduce emissions even before a hoped-for climate treaty, saying aggressive measures can still limit global warming.

Over the next seven years, aggressive efforts to tackle greenhouse-gas emissions from power plants, refineries, and pipelines, and especially to boost energy efficiency, could still keep the world on track to meet its goal of holding increases in global average temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

What?s more, those efforts need not come at the expense of a profitable energy sector, a concern that has fueled opposition to international agreements on curbing emissions and slowing climate change.

That's the conclusion the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA) has reached after reviewing rising global emissions trends from energy production, rising greenhouse-gas concentrations in general, and the glacial efforts to craft a new global climate treaty by 2015, to take effect in 2020.

Eight years have passed since the first attempt at a global climate treaty ? the 1997 Kyoto Protocol ? took effect. It's first four-year enforcement period ended last year. Throughout the pact's torturous negotiations and implementation, however, emissions have continued to climb.

The pace has even topped some of the highest emissions trajectories climate researchers and economists developed as tools to evaluate the level of effort needed to deal with global warming, as well as the consequences of inaction.

Even with climate policies currently in place globally and nationally, emissions of greenhouse gases in 2020 are projected to be 4 billion tons higher than they should be if nations are intent on giving themselves a 50-50 chance of holding the rise in global average temperatures to 2 degrees C, above pre-industrial levels by 2100, the IEA notes. At global climate talks negotiators have settled on the 2-degree target in order to minimize the harmful effects of global warming.

The agency estimates that the aggressive global approach it recommends could slash that 2020 emissions excess to a far more manageable 900 million tons.

Some 49 percent of that reduction would come from tighter energy-efficiency standards on everything from cars and home appliances to industrial motors and heating and cooling equipment. Another 21 percent could come from reducing reliance on ? or simply not building ? coal-fired power plants that use the least-efficient technology. Some 18 percent of the emissions reductions would come from plugging methane leaks at oil and natural-gas refineries and in pipelines. Finally, 12 percent of the reductions could come from a partial reduction in subsidies to the fossil-fuel industry.

?We identify a set of proven measures that could stop the growth in global energy-related emissions by the end of this decade at no net economic cost,? said IEA Chief Economist Fatih Birol, the report?s lead author, in a statement. ?Rapid and widespread adoption could act as a bridge to further action, buying precious time while international climate negotiations continue.?

In one sense, the report offers proposals that already are widely seen as arrows in the climate-change quiver. But the report also suggests that these are far more affordable than some have suggested, according to World Resources Institute President Andrew Steer.

"The common assumption is that action to reduce emissions is prohibitively expensive," he said in a statement. But, he added, "The IEA's new report offers affordable and common sense measures to rein in energy-related emissions."

Quite apart from its impact on emissions, the IEA's approach also could build support for the heavier lifting that is likely to come in a 2015 agreement.

The IEA is offering a "let's get started" plan, adds Gregory Nemet, a political scientist who focuses on climate, energy, and resource issues at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The plan urges individual governments to adopt affordable, interim policies, such as improved fuel efficiency standards, to make the goals of any future climate treaty more achievable.
