(AP) ? Survivors of Cambodia's Khmer Rouge regime held a remembrance ceremony in an infamous "killing field" Sunday, a day before a U.N.-backed tribunal begins a trial for three of the accused architects of some of the 20th century's worst atrocities.

Relatives of the victims wept as they chanted and burned incense near a glass case filled with skulls at the Choeung Ek Genocide Center on Sunday. The memorial stands in a field where the Khmer Rouge executed people during their 1975-79 rule that left nearly 2 million people dead.

The emotional ceremony was held to allow Cambodians an opportunity to share their concerns and remember loved ones ahead of the trials of three of the Khmer Rouge's surviving inner circle ? all now in their 80s ? on charges including crimes against humanity, genocide and torture.

"As the trial starts tomorrow, I want to remind the victims and ask them to push this trial to find justice for those who were killed by the Khmer Rouges regime," said 80-year-old Chum Mey, who is one of the only two survivors from the notorious S-21 prison.

An estimated 1.7 million people died of execution, starvation, exhaustion or lack of medical care as a result of the Khmer Rouge's radical communist policies, which essentially turned all of Cambodia into a forced labor camp.

Tribunal spokesman Huy Vannak called the proceedings beginning Monday "the most important trial in the world" because of the seniority of those involved.

On trial will be the Khmer Rouge's chief ideologist, Nuon Chea, 85, former head of state Khieu Samphan, 80, and former foreign minister Ieng Sary, 86.

A fourth defendant, 79-year-old Ieng Thirith, was ruled unfit to stand trial last week because she has Alzheimer's disease. She is Ieng Sary's wife and served as the regime's minister for social affairs.

The Khmer Rouge's supreme leader Pol Pot died in 1998 in a Khmer Rouge jungle camp, where he was held prisoner after his former comrades turned on him. He had led the group from its clandestine revolutionary origins to open resistance after a 1970 coup installed a pro-American government and dragged Cambodia directly into the maelstrom of the Vietnam War.

After a bloody civil war, the Khmer Rouge guerrillas took power in 1975 and all but sealed off the country to the outside world. They immediately emptied the capital Phnom Penh of almost all its inhabitants, sending them to vast rural communes as part of an effort to turn the country into a socialist utopia. With intellectuals and anyone too closely associated with the previous regime executed, an economic and social disaster ensued.

The failures only fed the group's paranoia, and imagined traitors ? said to be working with the U.S., or Vietnam, the country's traditional enemy ? were hunted down, only plunging the country further into chaos. Vietnam, whose border provinces had suffered bloody attacks, sponsored a resistance movement and invaded, ousting the Khmer Rouge from power in 1979 and installing a client government.

More than three decades later, hundreds of thousands of Cambodians still struggle with the trauma inflicted by the regime and the long-delayed hunt for justice.

The U.N.-backed tribunal of Cambodian and international judges, which was established in 2006, has so far tried just one case, convicting Kaing Guek Eav, the former head of the regime's notorious S-21 prison, last July and sentencing him to 35 years in prison for war crimes, crimes against humanity and other offenses.

That case was seen as much simpler than the current case, which covers a much broader range of activities and because Kaing Guek Eav confessed to his crimes. Those going on trial Monday have steadfastly maintained their innocence. The prison chief was also far lower in the regime's leadership ranks than the current defendants.

There has been concern that the top Khmer Rouge leaders, all aging and in poor health, could die before a verdict is delivered.

The first part of the trial will consider charges involving the forced movement of people and crimes against humanity, while later proceedings will focus on other charges including genocide.

"I'm so happy and I could not sleep last night when I heard these leaders were to appears before the tribunal," said 80-year-old Chum Mey, one of only two survivors from the S-21 prison. "We have been waiting for more than 30 years to hear these leaders' voice saying the true story of their reign that brought death to over a million people."

Grenade blasts bring violence to Syrian capital (AP)

BEIRUT ? Rocket-propelled grenades struck the headquarters of Syria's ruling party Sunday, bringing the violence that has engulfed much of the country to the heart of its capital for the first time, activists said.

The attack on the building in Syria's capital of Damascus apparently caused no damage or casualties. But if true, it would mark a significant shift in the eight-month uprising against President Bashar Assad. Until now, the capital has remained relatively untouched.

The pre-dawn attack awoke many Syrians who reported hearing two loud blasts, but details could not be confirmed. The foreign minister denied an attack had taken place, and Syrian television broadcast footage of the building looking undamaged.

The Free Syrian Army, a group of military defectors, claimed responsibility, highlighting the growing militarization of the revolt following months of largely peaceful protests.

"This is an escalation that would signal a new phase in the Syrian uprising," said Thabet Salem, a Damascus-based analyst. "It gives a new dimension to the whole situation, which had been so far restricted to (government) action, and reaction from the opposition," he said.

Syria has placed severe restrictions on the work of journalists, making it extremely difficult to confirm events.

The country's embattled but defiant president vowed to pursue his bloody crackdown on dissent, saying it was his "duty" as president to crush the militants he blames for the unrest.

Syria's uprising against Assad, although largely peaceful, has grown more violent in recent weeks as frustrated protesters realize the limits of peaceful action. Army dissidents who sided with the protests have also grown bolder, fighting back against regime forces and even attacking military bases and raising fears of a civil war.

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem dismissed the idea of civil war, saying such talk was "wishful thinking" by the West.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said unknown gunmen on motorcycles threw first a stun grenade and then fired RPGs at the Baath party headquarters, hitting the outside wall of the building. Two other grenades missed the target, it said.

Omar Idilbi, spokesman of the Local Coordination Committees' activist network, also said the perpetrators were masked men on motorcycles. But he cast doubt on the claim of responsibility by the Free Syrian Army, saying the target was suspicious.

"The Baath party headquarters is not a military or security base to be attacked by the FSA," he said.

The foreign minister said reports of an attack were "absolutely baseless." But at a news conference, he thanked a Syrian journalist for clarifying that the explosions heard in the area were the result of a stun grenade, indirectly acknowledging that some kind of attack had taken place.

In Cairo, the Arab League rejected amendments proposed by Syria to a peace plan to end the crisis, saying the changes alter the plan's "essence." The rejection is a further blow to Syria, a country that prides itself on being a bastion of Arab nationalism.

Last week the body reaffirmed its suspension of Syria and gave it three days to comply with the plan, which calls for the withdrawal of government tanks from the streets, the release of political prisoners and a halt to attacks on civilians.

The 22-member organization did not give details of Syria's proposed amendments. It said in a statement Sunday that Damascus' proposals were unacceptable because they introduce "drastic changes" to the mandate of a proposed league mission to ensure the plan is implemented.

Al-Moallem told reporters the proposed observers' mission included "impossible conditions" and gave excessive authority to the observers in a way that violated Syria's sovereignty. He denied Damascus sought to restrict the observers' movement within the country but said Syria wanted to be informed of the groups' travels in order to offer security protection.

"The observers, if they come, will have freedom of movement," he said. "We have nothing to hide. They should see the killings, the massacres and the crimes being carried out against our people and security forces."

An Arab League official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters, said the Syrian government was required to implement the peace plan in its entirety.

In an interview with Britain's Sunday Times newspaper, Assad vowed to crush "militants" who he says are massacring Syrians.

"The role of the government is to fight those militants in order to restore stability and to protect civilians," he said, repeating warnings that foreign military intervention in Syria would "shake the entire Middle East."

On Sunday, activist groups said at least nine people were killed by security forces, including five in the flashpoint central city of Homs and four in northern Syria.

The U.N. says more than 3,500 people in Syria have been killed in the crackdown since the start of the uprising in mid-March. The LCC network on Sunday said at least 280 children had been killed in the crackdown.

Assad, in the interview, said more than 800 Syrian officers and security forces had been killed.

In the interview, Assad said he feels "pain and sorrow" for the bloodshed but insisted the solution was to eliminate the militants he blamed for much of the violence. The Assad regime maintains the militants are following a foreign agenda to isolate and weaken Syria.

Assad, who took over from his late father, Hafez, in 2000, said there would be parliamentary elections in February or March, after which there would be a new government and new constitution.

"That constitution will set the basis of how to elect a president. ... The ballot box should decide who should be president."

Turn a Plastic Bottle Into a Water-Resistant Smartphone Bike Mount [DIY]

Turn a Plastic Bottle Into a Water-Resistant Smartphone Bike MountWe've shown you one or two ways to mount your smartphone to your bike, but that won't do you much good when it starts drizzling outside. This quick trick will make sure your smartphone stays safe and dry.

This works with nearly any smartphone mounting method out there: all you need to do is cut the top off a plastic bottle and cut a slit down one side to leave room for your smartphone's mount. It might not be the best if it's pouring rain outside, but it'll certainly keep it safe from the occasional shower?and you can always seal it in a plastic bag, too, if the bottle isn't cutting it. Hit the link to read more.

BLABBERMOUTH.NET - SLAVIA Vocalist Loses Battle With Cancer

SLAVIA vocalist Jonas Christiansen was found dead in his apartment early this morning (Thursday, November 17) after battling colon cancer for the past few months. He was 31 years old.

On November 18, members of several high-profile Norwegian metal bands, including DARKTHRONE, SATYRICON and TAAKE, will take part in a live show called "Algir - St?ttekonsert For Jonas R. Christiansen", at Bergen's prime rock venue, Garage, to raise awareness of colon cancer. In addition, HELHEIM, GRAVDAL and SLAVIA themselves will perform at the event that was originally intended to be a fund-raising concert, but will now go ahead as a memorial show for Christiansen.

Born and brought up in Kongsberg in the Eighties, Jonas Christiansen put his original band SLAVIA on hiatus and moved to Oslo to concentrate on Moonfog Productions' newly-signed band DISIPLIN in 2003. While their self-titled debut album quickly shot them onto the national and international stratosphere through their contagious, mid-tempo riffs intermittently layered around chilly black metal blast beats, it was their second album, "Anti-Life", that saw the Norwegian ensemble truly owning their musical skills. As DISIPLIN went through a variety of personnel changes in 2005, Christiansen moved back to Bergen and resurrected his original project SLAVIA which released debut album, "Strength And Vision", through Drakkar in 2007.

"Algir - St?ttekonsert For Jonas R. Christiansen" participating artists:

* Nocturno Culto (DARKTHRONE)
* Satyr (SATYRICON)
* Frost (SATYRICON)
* Hoest (TAAKE)
* SLAVIA
* HELLHEIM
* GRAVDAL

GOP lawmaker ends hold on some aid to Palestinians (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Palestinians are slated to receive some $200 million in U.S. security assistance after a top House Republican ended her hold on the money.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, informed the Obama administration in recent weeks that she no longer would block $50 million in economic support funds for the Palestinian Security Forces and $148 million in other assistance.

In separate letters to the State Department and USAID, Ros-Lehtinen cited certification by President Barack Obama that the aid was in the national security interests of the United States, as well as word that the government of Israel did not object. The letters were sent in September and October.

In an interview with The Associated Press last month, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the administration has reached out to Israel ? which has an interest in maintaining Palestinian security aid ? to convince Congress to support assistance.

"We're asking the Israelis on a case-by-case basis," she said.

Ros-Lehtinen had blocked the funds in late August, just as the Palestinians were gearing up to seek statehood recognition at the United Nations. The Florida lawmaker placed an "informational hold" on the money, seeking material from the administration. The Palestinians pursued statehood recognition despite strong objections from the United States and Israel.

Brad Goehner, a spokesman for the committee, said Monday that the administration had provided the panel with some 1,000 pages of documents.

The Palestinians have received about $500 million a year from the U.S. alone in recent years, including tens of millions of dollars for training the Palestinian security services. The partial suspension of aid by Congress had mainly affected development and infrastructure programs being supervised by USAID, but not the support for the security services.

The United States recently stopped $60 million in aid to UNESCO after the international organization admitted the Palestinians as a member. Ros-Lehtinen stands firm on that issue, saying recently that she supports the U.S. law that requires a cutoff of American funds to any U.N. entity that gives membership to the Palestinian Liberation Organization.

"That is the right policy, and it must continue in order to deter other U.N. entities from following in UNESCO's footsteps," Ros-Lehtinen said.

How to Load Up Your Ereader with Ebooks For Free [Ebooks]

How to Load Up Your Ereader with Ebooks For Free Amazon unveiled their Kindle Lending Library for Amazon Prime members last week, but even if you're a Prime member, the new Lending Library only offers you a single book per Prime account, and if you use a Kindle app or another ereader, you're out of luck. Put that Kindle-or any ereader for that matter?to better use in a closer place than you might expect: your local library.

While the Kindle Lending Library is a great addition to Amazon's lineup of services for Amazon Prime members, it is a bit limited in that you only have access to about 5,000 books right now, and you can only check out a few books per Prime account, no matter how many Kindles, users, or even devices running the Kindle app there happen to be in your household. If you own a different ereader, use a Kindle app for your phone or desktop, or just want more options, thousands of libraries around the country are home to large libraries of ebooks, ready and waiting for you to check them out.

How to Load Up Your Ereader with Ebooks For Free

Use OverDrive to Find Supported Libraries Near You

OverDrive is a digital distribution and publishing company that partners with thousands of libraries, schools, and universities around the globe to give users access to ebooks on any device they may own. The beauty of the OverDrive service though is that it's not limited to Kindle owners, but it supports them and Kindle app users. The OverDrive Media Console works on Mac OS systems, Windows computers, iOS devices, Android devices, and Windows Phones, and OverDrive locations support lending ebooks to more ereaders and tablets than we can list here. It's safe to say that if there's a library near you in the search results, you can take any device and borrow an ebook to read.

A few months ago, Amazon announced that Kindle owners could visit their local libraries to check out books, which was really their way of announcing Amazon finally partnered with OverDrive for distribution to Kindle devices. OverDrive already works worldwide. To find out if your library participates, visit OverDrive Search, click Library Search, and type in your ZIP or postal code. Odds are there's some location near you.

Search What's Available Before You Leave for the Library

One of the nice things about OverDrive supported libraries is that they often allow you to search what's available for your specific device or in formats your device understands before you walk out of your door and head for your library. In most cases, you can even see how many "copies" are available to borrow, so you don't waste your time heading in to the library to borrow an ebook you really want only to find out it's unavailable.

Unfortunately, most publisher agreements with OverDrive and with libraries that use it require them to treat ebooks the same way as digital copies. That means that is a limited quantity of "books" that can be loaned to ereaders, and in some cases that quantity also depends on the number of paper copies on the shelves. When all of the paper copies are gone, some libraries won't let you take out the digital copies either. It's not ideal, but until book publishers' approach to lending changes, even physical lending libraries will have limitations on how ebooks are given out to patrons.

How to Load Up Your Ereader with Ebooks For Free

Walk In to Pick Up Your Ebooks or Check Out Online

Some libraries allow you to check out your books online and transfer them to the device of your choice. They'll be added to your library account as "checked out," and you'll have to check them back in when your lending period is up. Others require you to walk in to the library and check them out there.

OverDrive isn't only useful for libraries though. The service also works with brick-and-mortar booksellers who participate with the program, so you can walk in and walk out with paper books and ebooks. You can search the OverDrive directory for book titles you're interested in, or for booksellers in your area that support sales on ereaders.

The Kindle Lending Library is a great tool, especially if you're a Kindle owner and a Prime member. If you're only one of or neither or those two things, a quick web search or search at your local library's web site is the ticket to loading up your smartphone, tablet, or computer with ebooks. If you're no fan of having to borrow the books, you can always download free books from Project Gutenberg. Do you have a favorite source for free ebooks? Share it the comments below.
