Qt developers gain NFC support with Nokia's latest SDK update

Nokia's development community just got its first taste of near field lovin' with the first Qt SDK to support NFC. While you'll be forgiven if you're not up in arms over the latest revelation, owners of the company's latest handsets can soon expect a greater number of useful apps that take advantage of this newfangled technology. The developer tools enable the creation of applications for both Symbian and MeeGo, and allows software authors to simulate NFC tags and create events based around them -- all within the virtual environment. Programmers looking to dip their toes into the water will find a couple of experimental apps from Espoo's pride that highlight near field communication, along with the complete source code for each. Sounds like it's time for some to make a pot of coffee and let the coding madness ensue.

Business Process Security Model -sale/purchase of a pencil model ...

Business Process Security Model ? better know to gAtO as ?Aliens Hacked My Website Model?

What type of data are we attempting to secure. Internal/External, let?s look at the business process to better understand security in your company. Let?s take a look at the?sale of a pencil model ?and the?purchase of a pencil model. So the gAtO can have fun let?s remember every person in the food chains can be an ?insider threat? -gAtO scary.

Customer orders a pencil.?

  • Order is taken
  • Copy ? Accounting ? Sales ? Inventory ? Shipping

Company purchase a pencil

  • Buyer -
  • Select vendors
  • Make contract -Management
  • Buy Pencil ? from China
  • Copy ? Accounting ? Inventory ? Shipping ? Management

The basic ?cyber business process model? when applied to a security assessment clearly define the security data points. Let?s look at this example and look at some of what we gained from the??Aliens Hacked My Website Model?

What does the business person think important about this process? Customer List - Vendor list ? Financial Information ? Legal (contrat ? International laws). A security person may think, is the order for the pencil online, do I need a SSL connection. They may see an Access Control List (ACL) list as to who has access to financial information. Financial information is very sensitive and so is Legal, during International contract negotiations. The Shipping department or Inventory control department don?t need to see accounting and legal information. Sales may need to see some financial information (calculate pay-performance) and the Inventory department may need to see some legal aspect (contracts) to know when re-supplies are coming in. Compliance manager may need this to stay ISO standards compliant. Document everything.

So you can see that by taking a business process and looking at it from a security and business perspective together, it may help define what are the security points are and what needs mediation for a security solution. There is a lot more to gleam from looking at the SOP and then how security can help you be compliant. I will also point to the security aspect of people involved in every operation and what roles and rights to give to access data. This alone will help you with the problem of ?insider threats? in a forensic investigation.

Here are useful advice for any organization from gAtO: Cyber Security advise:

  • have a Incident Response Plan (IRP) -READY NOW!!!!
  • Deploy defense-in-depth
  • Check your Log?s
  • Use a strict but flexible information security policy and practices
  • Have regular audits of your security by an outside firm
  • Use IDS or IPS
  • Teach your staff about information security
  • Teach your staff about social engineering
  • Develop good Vendor relations
  • Keep your software and hardware up to date -Patch control ? Test every patch it may open more security holes.
  • Watch security (Intelligence Team) sites for news on computer security and learn what the new attacks are. zero(0)day?xxs
  • Have a disaster recovery plan ready
  • Let your sysadmins go to Defcon.
  • Get good sysadmins who understand security -pay them well
  • Encrypt all your data (something like AES-256)
  • Use spam filters
  • Develop an Intelligence team to look at cyber chatter
  • Keep an eye on what information you are letting out into the public domain
  • Use good physical security. What good is all the [security] software if someone could just walk in and take [your ?secure? systems]?

PII (Personally Identifiable Information)

Privacy has been and will continue to be a hot topic; however, if you are an international organization, you definitely should watch for it on your radar.

While Information Security may consider privacy part of their jurisdiction, it should be the responsibility of Legal and HR. ?Information Security should be present to guide the protection of information, but should not own the compliance and/or business processes surrounding Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

With the E.U. Safe Harbor framework, many organizations are scrambling to understand what this means, and whether other countries will accept the standard (i.e., Germany), or whether the standard will accept them (sorry, Mexico). ?One idea which often is overlooked when discussing PII is the presence of a good Incident Response Plan (IRP).

Privacy regulations are very particular with regard to PII being leaked or breached. When performing a privacy assessment, be certain to allocate some of your budget to the development/update of your IRP.

ISO/IEC 27001 requires that management:

  • Systematically examine the organization?s information security risks, taking account of the threats, vulnerabilities and impacts;
  • Design and implement a coherent and comprehensive suite of information security controls and/or other forms of risk treatment (such as risk avoidance or risk transfer) to address those risks that are deemed unacceptable; and
  • Adopt an overarching management process to ensure that the information security controls continue to meet the organization?s information security needs on an ongoing basis.

Warren Buffet Gives Advice on Investing | Entmoney

Warren Buffet gives great advice about investing to a college student while at the?Keeping America Great forum held at?Columbia University.

Buffett: If you are going to spend a lot of time on investing, then you need to look at as many things as possible, and you will find some bargains. The world isn?t going to tell you where the opportunities are, so you have to find them yourself. The worst investment is cash, it will go down over time. The best investment is always a good investment. The financial panic is behind us. This will all end, but we don?t know whether it will be a month for now or a year from now. You can?t predict the bottom.

Experts Assess What Works for Weight Loss (HealthDay)

MONDAY , Oct. 3 (HealthDay News) -- Weight loss programs that focus on changing behaviors, as well as those that combine behavior changes and weight-loss medications such as orlistat (Alli, Xenical), can help people shed pounds, according to a new review.

"We found behaviorally based weight loss programs are generally effective for weight loss," said Dr. Erin LeBlanc, an investigator for Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore.

LeBlanc declined to mention particular behavioral intervention programs by name. However, components of commercial programs such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and others include group support, encouragement of physical activity, setting of goals and other strategies.

The study is published in the Oct. 4 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

LeBlanc and her colleagues were asked by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) -- a federal government panel that routinely issues guidelines on various medical issues -- to look at evidence on the effectiveness of various weight loss interventions. In 2003, the USPSTF recommended that doctors screen all adults for obesity and offer behavioral interventions for those who are obese -- people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above.

The USPSTF hopes to update those recommendations, so it asked LeBlanc's group to revisit the issue, looking over the newest data.

In all, the team reviewed 58 published trials involving overweight adults. Some had received behavioral treatment only, while some got behavioral treatment plus weight-loss medication.

Use of behavior-based weight loss programs resulted in people dropping an average 6.6 more pounds over 12 to 18 months than if they had attempted to slim down without such programs, the researchers reported. People who went to 12 to 26 intervention sessions during the first year on such programs lost 9 to 15 pounds, whereas those in the comparison groups lost little or no weight.

After 12 months, those who used the weight-loss drug orlistat along with a behavioral weight-loss program lost 11 to 22 pounds on average (about 8 percent of their starting weight). In comparison, people who had taken a placebo while they were on a weight loss program lost an average of between 7 and 13 pounds, the researchers said.

Research on the diabetes drug metformin -- used off-label for weight loss -- is limited, LeBlanc's team said. Two studies evaluated by the researchers included people with so-called "prediabetes." Those who took metformin and engaged in a behavioral weight-loss program lost about 4 to 9 pounds, on average, compared to a loss of less than 2 pounds in those who just had behavioral support.

A typical behavior-based program studied had multiple parts, LeBlanc said. For instance, a program might offer group education sessions, individual counseling, or a combination, and also encourage physical activity. These programs would also encourage participants to monitor themselves and set goals.

LeBlanc's team encountered some trouble evaluating the data, especially regarding the medication studies, which typically had high dropout rates (often because of gastrointestinal symptoms). These studies often didn't include enough participants to accurately assess side effects, either, the researchers said.

And while those people who took orlistat typically experienced more weight loss, "we don't know what happens when they quit [the drug]," LeBlanc noted.

The FDA revised the warning label for orlistat in 2010, alerting users to a rare but severe risk for liver injury. The label revision applied to both Alli, sold over the counter, and Xenical, the prescription form.

"Our evidence says that the benefits of weight loss drugs have to be weighed against the risks," LeBlanc said.

Dr. Frank Greenway, professor and chief of the outpatient clinic at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., called the weight-loss results "underwhelming."

While a small percent of people may take weight off short term, few keep it off long term, he said.

Another expert agreed. The new study "confirms what we knew," said Dr. Robin Blackstone, president of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery and a bariatric surgeon in Scottsdale. "Medical weight loss is not very robust, but it [diet medication] does have an effect."

The bariatric surgery community, she said, is supportive of people trying behavioral and medical interventions first, before they head to surgery. For some, she said, surgery may eventually be a more effective option. "I think evidence is beginning to show that there are people with a very high propensity to being big," she said. "They're fighting against that their whole life."

Blackstone reports consulting work for Johnson & Johnson. She is conducting a research study for EnteroMedics, which is developing an obesity treatment.

Urkel Who?!

urkel2.jpg
Jaleel White is best known for his nerdy character, Steven Urkel, from the '90s sitcom Family Matters, but now the actor wants the world to know him for his new stylish image.

Legendary stylist June Ambrose took Jaleel under her wing and dressed him in three looks from classic designer Paul Stuart on October 1. The three chosen looks were classic Paul Stuart, a red-carpet jaw-dropper and also a modern reinterpretation of Urkel. At The Paul Stuart store in New York, June shared that even though she grew up watching Urkel on TV, she had never met the actor until now and was glad to help him rebrand himself. All of this transformation was filmed in part for the style icon's new reality show for VH1, which follows June styling some of the biggest names in fashion and music. It looks like Urkel is all grown up, and has gone from nerd to hunk!

Facebook Timeline delayed, but not due to suit

Timelines.com

Timelines.com's home page.

By Suzanne Choney

Facebook is delaying the start of its Timeline feature, which lets users tell the stories of their lives, but a spokesman says it is not because of a lawsuit that has been filed against the social networking site.

Timeslines.com filed a trademark infringement suit last week against Facebook in federal court in Chicago, where Timelines.com is based. The suit came a week or so after Facebook announced the new feature it planned to release in the weeks ahead.

Timelines.com describes itself as a site "that enables people like you to collaboratively record, discover and share history. It's history recorded by the people, for the people."

In the lawsuit, Timelines.com says Facebook's Timeline threatens Timelines.com's existence, and that:

Facebook's Timeline feature "infringes on Timelines? federally registered trademarks in that it causes confusion as to the source of the services offered to users of the Internet. Indeed, Facebook?s ?Timeline? offering and its misdirection of users attempting to access Timelines? offering is intended to prevent Internet users from accessing information about Timelines.com and to allow users to instead use Facebook?s ?Timeline? offering.

The court rejected Timeslines.com's request for a temporary restraining order to stop Facebook from going ahead with Timeline.

However, Mashable reports that "several (Facebook) developers have noted that a message saying that Timelines would automatically publish to the public on September 29 has since been updated to October 6." A Facebook spokesman said any delay would not be because of the suit.

"Facebook has routinely said Timeline will be rolled out 'in the coming weeks," a spokesman said.

The social networking site does faces other challenges with Timeline, as well as with the new Ticker feature,? a real-time list of what friends ? and friends of friends ? are doing.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center, ACLU and other privacy and civil rights group are asking the Federal Trade Commission to look into Facebook's information-gathering practices for Timeline and Ticker, to see "whether the changes ... are consistent with the policies and representations that were in place when consumers provided their personal information to Facebook or whether they constitute unfair and deceptive trade practices, in violation of consumer protection law in the United States."

Kris Jenner: I Really Want Kourtney and Scott to Get Married! (omg!)

Kourtney Kardashian is adamant she doesn't want to marry longtime beau Scott Disick, but her mother, Kris Jenner, is still holding out hope her daughter will walk down the aisle sometime soon.

VIDEO: Why Kourtney won't marry Scott

"I would love for Kourtney and Scott to get married," Jenner, 55, said on Friday's episode of The Talk. "I have such a fantasy that she's going to have the same kind of life that I've had, and making that commitment to somebody makes your relationship very strong, even though it's just a piece of paper."

Despite her mother's wishes, Kardashian -- who has a 21-month-old son, Mason, with Disick -- says she's just fine without saying "I do."

"I definitely don't want to get married just for the sake of getting married," she reasoned on an episode of the family's reality series, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, last summer, even after her boyfriend went so far as to shop for engagement rings. "This is my life. I don't need a piece of paper to make it a family unit."

Jenner argues that she just wants her daughter and Disick to experience the same happy marriage she has with former Olympian Bruce Jenner.

"I just feel so lucky and I want my kids to experience the same things," she said on The Talk, breaking down in tears. "When you have that love, you want to set an example and [let your children] experience that same kind of love."
